Today, Donald Trump took oath of office to become the 47th President of the United States. The 2025 Inauguration drew in a mixture of politicians—including outgoing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris—Trump’s inner circle, and tech barons Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. Members of the Arnault family, including LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault and his children Delphine and Alexandre were also in attendance. Former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton also assembled in Washington, D.C. to witness the transition of power. Notably absent were former First Lady Michelle Obama and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi.

While politicians are not a famously fashionable group, we usually look to the first ladies to send a message their Inauguration looks. Many choose to wear American designers, like Michelle Obama, who wore Isabel Toledo and J.Crew gloves for the 2009 swearing-in ceremony before changing into a white Jason Wu evening dress for the Inaugural Ball. For Biden’s 2021 Inauguration, Jill Biden opted for a blue dress and matching overcoat by New York label Markarian. Dr. Biden’s matching blue face mask also served as a reminder that the country was still in the midst of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

Melania Trump followed the unofficial rule of wearing an American designer for Trump’s 2017 swearing-in, when she donned a light blue Ralph Lauren dress. But her fashion choices were also the source of many gaffes during her first tenure as first lady—most notably the army green Zara jacket that read “I Don’t Really Care, Do U?”, which she wore to visit children at the border in McAllen, Texas.

Melania abided by the American designer brief for the 2025 Inauguration in a custom Adam Lippes black coat dress with a white collar and a matching wide-brimmed Eric Javits hat. Second Lady Usha Vance opted for a pink tea-length Oscar de la Renta coat and taupe boots. Ivanka Trump attended in an emerald green skirt suit from Dior with a matching pillbox hat, and carried a black Lady Dior bag.

Just weeks after Ralph Lauren became the first fashion designer to be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the designer dressed the outgoing President and First Lady. Jill Biden wore a violet coat with matching shoes and gloves, while former President Biden wore a navy suit with a blue tie to depart the capital.

Inside the Rotunda, MAGA fashion was on full display. Men showed their allegiance to Trump with ties in shades of red—including Zuckerberg, Bezos, Chew, and New York City mayor Eric Adams. Meanwhile, the women took different approaches. Zuckerberg’s wife, Priscilla Chan, wore a conservative blue skirt suit with a large double strand of pearls. Lauren Sánchez, on the other hand, opted for a structured white Alexander McQueen suit over a lacy white bra, which she paired with a white wool and mohair Schiaparelli coat complete with gold nipple buttons.

To close out Inauguration Day, Trump attended several celebration balls including the Commander in Chief Ball and The Liberty Ball—the latter where he was joined by his children and their spouses. Melania and her longtime stylist Herve Pierre collaborated to design her gown: a strapless white silk crepe dress with thick bands of black silk gazar. Her black choker was fastened with a diamond broach created by Harry Winston in 1955. Melania wore a gown designed by Pierre in 2017 for Trump’s first Inauguration: an off-white dress with similar band edging, and a thin red belt. Usha Vance wore a blue sequin dress with a sheer mesh illusion neckline and tulle overlay.

For the Liberty Ball, Ivanka wore a Givenchy haute couture dress made from taffeta and organza in off-white, with black floral detailing on the bust and arpeggiated skirt, which she styled with elbow-length black gloves.

The lead-up to the 2025 Inauguration laid the ground for fashion controversy. Oscar de la Renta created custom dresses for Second Lady Usha Vance—a strapless black velvet gown—and First Daughter Ivanka Trump—a crystal and pearl empire-waisted dress with a silver stole—causing an outcry on social media. During Trump’s first term, many designers, including Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim, and Derek Lam, announced that they would not dress the first lady. When Ralph Lauren dressed Melania for the 2017 Inauguration, the brand was met with threats of boycott. This time, many feel as though the fashion industry feels comfortable associating with the Trumps and those in their orbit, with criticism flooding X and Oscar de la Renta’s Instagram comments section alike.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

The article clearly slags off Trump and Republicans and Vogue continues their slobberfest over Dems.

But the fact that they covered the Inauguration…well,I bet they’ll put Melania on their cover in the next 4 years.

I didn’t know Joe Rogan was at the inauguration. This was a smart move- Trump appearing on his podcast may not have won him the election, but it wasn’t inconsequential.

She'll tell Vogue to stick it.

I'd like to see a book that tells about raising Barron and making breakfast for him and taking him to school every day.....And the years in between...and a whole big section on her wardrobe and daily regimens.
