Sega has created a life-size Sonic the Hedgehog figure that contains synthetic “Sonic DNA” to celebrate the blue blur’s 35th anniversary.
In what is arguably one of the most bizarre things I’ve written this year, Sega has now created a Sonic figure that has the lightning-fast hedgehog’s DNA housed inside it (yes, this is a real thing, I promise).
According to the translated press release, Sonic’s genetic blueprint was created in collaboration with LOM BABY, the team behind biotechnology installations that show off engineered dragon meat, alien DNA, and the viral T-Virus sample from Capcom’s Resident Evil series.
As for how you go about creating a DNA sample for the world’s most famous hedgehog, well, it’s just about as bizarre as it sounds.
Sega creates Sonic figure with “Sonic DNA”
In order to cook up some genetic code for Sonic, the team carefully analyzed his appearance, personality, signature abilities, and inability to swim. All of these characteristics were then made into a synthetic DNA sequence, which Sega says represents Sonic’s core.
The model of Sonic’s DNA was then sealed inside a glowing green Chaos Emerald, before being placed within his stomach. Things get even more Frankenstein as the life-size figure has a convenient viewing window too, so that blue blur fans can take a peek at his very essence.
As for why, I hear you ask, well, Sega says it’s so “Sonic’s core will continue to exist far into the future without ever fading.” It certainly sounds like something befitting of a Jurassic Park film, just without the flesh-eating dinosaurs stomping around.
Of course, if you’re interested in seeing the life-size Sonic figure with IRL Sonic DNA for yourself, you can do so by visiting Sega’s Shibuya store in Tokyo from June 23.
While we’re a way off from actually bringing Sonic to life, that hasn’t stopped one genetic engineering company from creating dire wolf pups and aiming to bring back extinct blue antelopes.
