Sen. McConnell Discharged From Rehab Facility

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Aug. 6 that he has been discharged from a rehabilitation facility and will be going home.

“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” McConnell, 84, said in a statement.

He thanked friends, colleagues, and Kentucky residents for wishing him well, and the facility’s workers for helping care for him.

The senator did not provide any indication of when he will return to the Senate, from which he has been absent since June.

McConnell fell while at home that month and was taken to a hospital. He was later shifted to the rehab facility.

“Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls,” Congress’s Office of the Attending Physician said in late July.

McConnell has represented Kentucky in the Senate since 1985. He is the third-oldest U.S. senator, behind Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). He is not running for another term. His term is slated to end in January 2027.
