Senegal’s opposition parties are uniting in preparation for early legislative elections on November 17 – a move that is changing the West African country’s political landscape. One major development is the creation of the “Bloc of Liberals and Democrats” (BLD) – Takku, an alliance of 40 political parties that includes former President Macky Sall’s Alliance for the Republic (APR) and former Prime Minister Idrissa Seck’s Rewmi. Modou Diagne Fada, a key figure in the coalition, stated that their goal is to strengthen opposition forces against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who recently dissolved the national assembly and called for snap elections. Faye made the decision after the opposition-controlled house refused to pass bills from the executive. However, the coalition could undermine his plans by preventing the Pastef party from securing the majority he needs to implement his promised reforms.
