An American tourist fell to his knees after learning the woman he struck while riding his dirt bike along a highway in Thailand had died from her injuries.
Philip Edward McMorrow, 37, had been speeding along Highway 1317 in Chang Mai in northern Thailand when he collided with 67-year-old Kia Sae-wang, flinging her body onto the pavement with a devastating force.
Kia, a lifelong resident of the Mae On district where the collision occurred, had been running errands and was on her way to the shops.
Witnesses say the incident happened at high speed at around 4pm on Thursday just as Kia stepped out into the road, but unseen by McMorrow.
Locals rushed to the scene along in an attempt to help save the woman who was lying motionless on the asphalt.
Paramedics were called who fought desperately to save her life, administering CPR before rushing her to a nearby hospital.
Despite their efforts, Kia succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at hospital.
When police arrived they found McMorrow uninjured but visibly shaken.

Upon hearing Kia had died from her injuries, the tourist, still clad in his dirt bike gear, dropped to his knees.
Tears streamed down his face as he repeatedly apologized to Kia's family.
Grieving relatives of Kia's began to gather near the crash site.
In photos taken close to the scene, the dirt bike could be seen nearby with its tires still caked in dust from the road.
Authorities say an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident with initial reports suggesting McMorrow may have been breaking the speed limit, a violation that carries severe penalties under Thai law.
McMorrow now faces the grim possibility of legal action in Thailand, where penalties for causing a fatal accident can be severe.
