Silent Hill fans are furious after a rare Townfall CRTV collectible sent exclusively to content creators appeared on eBay, with bidding already topping $3,000.
One of the coolest features of Silent Hill: Townfall is the game’s CRTV, a portable gadget that acts like an enemy motion tracker. When tuned to the right frequency, players can see the fleshy abominations through walls and even get video clip puzzle hints.
It’s a pretty neat gadget, and one of Townfall’s best features (I said as much in my glowing review). After all, without this tiny TV, protagonist Simon Ordell wouldn’t make it far in the fog-filled town of St. Amelia.
Ahead of Townfall’s September 24 launch, Konami produced 100 fully functioning CRTV replicas and sent them to influencers and members of the press. As you can imagine, the chunky device would make a pretty great gift for diehard fans, but it also seems to be a money-making opportunity as well.
Following this limited launch, one of the rare replicas has appeared on eBay and is now selling for over $3,000, and fans are not happy.
Silent Hill fans outraged over CRTV eBay listing
As of writing, the Silent Hill: Townfall CRTV collector’s item has received 69 bids and has a whopping $3,050.00 price tag. The super rare item’s final selling price could also rise even higher, as final bids are currently set to end on October 4.
The listing description for the CRTV reads: “Silenthill Townfall CRTV Functioning Collectors Item (Only 100 Made). This was sent to me directly from Konami. I do not need it. This turns on and plays a series of promotional videos for Silenthill Townfall. No game included.”
As you can imagine, this hasn’t exactly gone down well with Silent Hill fans, with both content creators and players calling out the reselling of the CRTV.
“Only 100 functioning Silent Hill: Townfall CRTVs were made, sent out to different influencers before the game’s release, and someone’s already selling theirs for over $300,” wrote IGN’s Jesse Gomez. “It’s a cute toy, but savage to be like ‘I do not need it’. Get that social post done and then get paid.”
eBayOthers were keen to call out how the device should be sent to true fans, instead of those who simply see it as a way to turn a profit. “Actually makes me feel sick to my stomach as both a lifelong die-hard fan and a content creator. This would have been absolutely incredible to have received. Truly disappointing behaviour,” wrote LunarLizzy.
“There’s people out here, like me, searching out handheld CRTs and making content with it for fun and passion, and then there’s these opportunistic, greedy people who want to profit from the brand’s generosity. Have these icky people really no shame?”
The final sale price remains to be seen, but with five days left in the auction and bidding already at $3,050, the limited-edition collectible could sell for considerably more.
