The Western world has long been slipping into the era of anti-white injustice.

The death of 18-year-old Henry Nowak shows how deep it runs.

Henry was a Polish‑British boy from Essex a few months into his first year of studying accountancy at the University of Southampton.

On the night of December 3, 2025, he had been out with his football teammates and was walking home through the Portswood area of the city when he encountered Vickrum Digwa, a 23-year-old Sikh man carrying a knife.

After a confrontation, Digwa stabbed Henry five times. The fatal wound pierced his heart. Henry ran and eventually collapsed on the street. When the police arrived, Digwa and his family lied to them, claiming Henry had racially abused and assaulted him.

Police bodycam footage shows Henry telling police that he had been stabbed. One officer replied, 'I don't think you have, mate,' while Henry was handcuffed and rolled – face down – into the dirt.

He died shortly afterward.

A video recovered from Henry's own phone, later found in Digwa's pocket, revealed that no racial abuse had occurred. The prosecution argued at trial that Digwa had fabricated the allegation to justify the killing. The jury agreed.

On May 28, 2026, Digwa was convicted of murder. On June 1, he was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years in prison. But this justice was partial because it did not answer the deeper question of why the British police believed an attacker's unverified accusation of racism over a bleeding boy, who was begging for help and who – in a tragic irony echoing one of America's darkest cases of police brutality – cried 'I can't breathe.'

After George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25, 2020, America, as well at the United Kingdom, convulsed.

In the US, statues were torn down. Entire communities were reduced to rubble by riots and politicians and law enforcement officers knelt, in solidarity with a movement that claimed Floyd had been killed – not just by a bad cop – but by a systemically racist system.

More than 4,000 miles away from Minneapolis, monuments to British statesmen were also torn down and British streets filled with demonstrators demanding justice for a man who died in another country. British members of Parliament and police took a knee in the streets even though the events had little to do with them.

Why?

The answer to that does not begin with George Floyd.

The United Kingdom and the West have long been inflected by the concept of 'white guilt.'

My father, the writer Shelby Steele, has argued for years that 'white guilt' is not merely a feeling but an accusation that whites, regardless of their individual acts, must atone for the past racial sins of the West, from slavery to colonialism.

This drives whites to dissociate from their assumed inherent sinfulness by seeking allyship with people of color – and it traps society in a script where whites eternally play the role of oppressor and people of color are eternally the oppressed.

The cost of this hierarchy is borne by real people.

People like Henry.

For nearly two decades, police and officials across England allegedly ignored the systematic rape of young white working‑class women and girls by gangs of adults, largely of Southeast Asian heritage.

Whistleblowers were smeared as Islamophobes for observing the race of alleged and convicted perpetrators. Independent inquiries and government reports found that local officials, who feared inflaming racial tensions or even the appearance of racism, downplayed and even dismissed the scale of the abuse.

The same pattern appeared more recently during Pro-Palestine protests in London, when police moved swiftly and heavily against small groups of Jewish counter‑demonstrators.

'You are quite openly Jewish, this is a pro-Palestinian march, I'm not accusing you of anything but I'm worried about the reaction to your presence,' an officer is heard telling a man wearing a kippa in April 2024. Another officer said: 'If you choose to remain here, because you are causing a breach of peace with all these other people, you will be arrested.'

Within this absurd hierarchy, Jews are cast as white, no matter their color.

Police later apologized to the man.

Law enforcement in the UK has become, it seems, racially calibrated.

The rules no longer appear to be neutral. And there are many Brits who now believe that rules are bent to favor those who share the same skin color as historical victims of Western slavery and colonialism.

In this order, whites are treated not as individuals but as a permanent defendant class, bearing a collective guilt that must be continually paid down, with no redemption in sight.

When police appear to instinctively stand with an accuser because he is brown and against a victim because he is white, then the principle of equal justice has already been hollowed out.

This is the moral logic of 'white guilt' tribalism.

It is not simply that some officers made bad decisions on a dark street in Southampton. It is that an entire moral order has taught them that accusations of racism carry an almost sacred weight and that to question such an accusation is more detrimental than to doubt the word of a dying boy.

'White guilt' was born in America. The UK did not experience the horrors of Jim Crow laws or Selma, Alabama's 'Bloody Sunday.' Its' racial history was largely colonial and external. It imported 'diversity' through immigration from former colonies.

But the moral logic of American 'white guilt' flowed across the Atlantic anyway and peaked in Britain with George Floyd's death. Henry Nowak's case shows how an American‑born framework was imposed onto British institutions. The UK absorbed critical race ideas – from 'white privilege' and 'microaggressions' to 'allyship' –through its elites and institutions and turned these concepts into policy and culture war weapons.

In some ways, the UK has enforced this framework even more aggressively than America.

The US still has, at least in principle, a deeper constitutional and cultural tradition of individual rights and colorblind justice than the UK.

America was founded in the language of individual rights – life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness – and, after a reckoning, its civil rights movement forced that principle to be applied across racial lines. Britain's rights culture grew more slowly out of monarchy, class and parliamentary supremacy.

For all its failures, America built stronger intellectual 'antibodies' against the idea that guilt and justice are collective.

Henry Nowak's death is not merely a UK tragedy. It is a Western one. It shows what happens when a moral deformation that began in America finds especially fertile ground in another country's institutions.

And it is a warning to America and the West of what awaits it if it abandons its' own best principle: that justice is for individuals, not tribes.
