The New England Patriots are trading quarterback Joe Milton III to the Dallas Cowboys, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday.

The Cowboys are sending their compensatory fifth-round pick to the Patriots for Milton and a seventh-round pick, sources told Schefter.

Milton become the Cowboys' backup to starter Dak Prescott. Cooper Rush, Prescott's longtime backup, signed with the Baltimore Ravens as a free agent last month.

The Patriots selected Milton in the sixth round of last year's draft. He was the Patriots' third-string quarterback last season behind starter Drake Maye and backup Jacoby Brissett.

Milton appeared in one game, completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown.

Brissett left as a free agent to sign with the Arizona Cardinals last month, but the Patriots signed a new backup in free agency in quarterback Joshua Dobbs.

Trey Lance, the Cowboys' third-string quarterback the past two seasons, remains a free agent.
