South Africa’s DA Sues Over Land Law

South Africa’s Democratic Alliance, the junior partner in the country’s coalition government, has filed a court challenge against the Expropriation Act, the same land reform law that President Trump referenced when suspending US aid last year. The legislation permits the state to seize land in the public interest, sometimes without compensation, as part of broader efforts to address apartheid-era inequality in land ownership. The DA argues the law grants authorities overly broad powers. However, the African National Congress defends it as essential to economic transformation. An analyst described the legal dispute as a way for the coalition partners to air their disagreement without it collapsing their fragile alliance ahead of November’s municipal elections. Two additional lawsuits from Afrikaner advocacy groups will be heard alongside the DA’s case.
