South Africa has submitted extensive evidence to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in its case alleging genocide by Israel in the Gaza Strip, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office announced on October 28. The document, known as a “memorial,” reportedly includes over 750 pages of text and 4,000 pages of supporting material that detail Israel’s alleged violations of the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention. The South African government claims this evidence demonstrates Israel’s intent to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza as well as its failure to prevent or punish such actions. However, Israel strongly denies the accusations. While the ICJ has confirmed receipt of the document, it remains confidential. The case, initially filed by South Africa in December, has since garnered support from several countries, including Spain, Bolivia, and Turkey. Although the ICJ’s rulings are binding, the court lacks the mechanisms to enforce its rulings.
