Biological men will not be allowed in women’s "restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms" at the Capitol, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) announced Wednesday.

"All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings are reserved for individuals of that biological sex," Johnson said in a statement. "It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol."

"Women deserve women's only spaces," Johnson added.

The move comes after Rep. Nancy Mace (R., S.C.) on Monday introduced a resolution banning biological men from women's facilities in the House. The resolution, Mace confirmed, was prompted by the arrival of Representative-elect Sarah McBride (D., Del.), a biological man who identifies as a female and is set to become Congress’s first transgender member in January.

"Biological men do not have any rights to women’s private spaces," Mace wrote on X. "It’s perverted to think otherwise."

"Protecting women and girls isn’t bigotry, it’s common sense. I will stand in the brink to protect women’s rights from the far left radicals trying to erase us," Mace added.

McBride criticized Mace’s resolution as "a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing."

"We're not anti-anyone. We're pro-woman," Johnson told reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday. "I think it's an important policy for us to continue. It's always been, I guess, an unwritten policy, but now it's in writing."
