Rúben Amorim Marks Final Home Game by Embarrassing City

Check out the best facts, stats and Opta data from a resounding win for Rúben Amorim with our Sporting CP vs Man City stats page.

Rúben Amorim signed off from European duties as manager of Sporting CP with a comprehensive victory over Manchester City.

In what was both his final match in continental competition and his final home game in charge of the Portuguese champions before he becomes Manchester United manager, Amorim oversaw a famous win.

Sporting went behind to an early Phil Foden strike but struck back not long before half-time when Viktor Gyökeres raced on to Geovany Quenda’s through ball to finish.

They then took the game out of City’s reach within four minutes of the restart, when Maximiliano Araújo put them in front before Gyökeres converted from the spot to make it 3-1. Another penalty completed the Swede’s hat-trick on a memorable night for the hosts, and a truly forgettable one for City.

Pep Guardiola’s men have now lost three games in a row, following defeats to Tottenham in the EFL Cup last week and to Bournemouth this weekend.
