International students once saw US colleges as a gateway to a world-class education and career head start but shifting United States immigration policies, tightening visa conditions and high-profile ICE raids are causing them to reconsider. For 23-year-old Kunle Adeyemi, it took some time to overcome the disappointment of being denied a student visa by the US consulate in Lagos last year. One year later, he considers the rejection a blessing.
“I have decided to go to China instead for my studies,” Adeyemi said in the bustling commercial capital of Nigeria.
“It is cheaper, the standards are good, and business between Africa and China is growing, which means more opportunities.”
