Stellar (XLM)'s Protocol 28 upgrade rolls out with key changes for validators, SDKs, and infrastructure. Mainnet vote set for Sept 9, 2026.
Stellar (XLM) is gearing up for its Protocol 28 upgrade, with key dates and technical changes announced to developers, infrastructure operators, and validators. The upgrade introduces new features to streamline ledger closure times, enhance smart contract capabilities, and update the SDK framework. The mainnet upgrade vote is scheduled for September 9, 2026, with the protocol going live on September 16, 2026.
What’s Changing?
Protocol 28 introduces CAP-85 and CAP-86, which enable atomic fleet upgrades and migration-friendly contract data. These features are particularly relevant to developers building on Stellar’s Soroban smart contracts. Validators will also need to implement clock synchronization via NTP to avoid network performance degradation, as the update aims to reduce ledger closure time variance.
Breaking changes include a new ledger value type under CAP-83, requiring adjustments for those consuming raw ledger data. Infrastructure updates must be completed by rolling out Protocol 28-compatible versions of Stellar Core, Horizon, RPC, and Galexie before the mainnet vote. Docker images and updated binaries for Debian packages will be available by August 21, 2026.
Timeline for Developers and Operators
To ensure compatibility, Stellar SDK users must upgrade before August 27, 2026, for testnet integration, and before September 16, 2026, for mainnet. For validators, the critical step is arming the upgrade command in Stellar Core before the mainnet vote. Wallets, exchanges, and custodians are advised to upgrade SDKs and infrastructure by the same deadlines.
Market Context
As of August 12, 2026, Stellar’s native token XLM is trading at $0.1968, reflecting a modest 0.83% 24-hour gain with a market capitalization of $5.9 billion. While the immediate price impact of Protocol 28 remains unclear, past upgrades, such as Protocol 27, have historically attracted increased developer activity and institutional interest. Notably, Protocol 27 introduced foundational changes like authentication delegation and address-bound Soroban credentials, laying the groundwork for the enhancements coming in Protocol 28.
Why It Matters
For developers, the upgrade expands Soroban’s smart contract functionality and offers tools for seamless migration. Infrastructure operators face a tighter timeline, as synchronized updates across validators and key systems are critical to maintaining network performance. The upgrade also underscores Stellar’s strategy to remain competitive as a cross-border payment and smart contract platform.
Given Stellar's current market position and growing adoption of its Soroban ecosystem, traders and investors should watch for potential network activity spikes as the upgrade date approaches. The mainnet vote on September 9, 2026, will be a pivotal moment for assessing the protocol's readiness and immediate market response.
