Weather experts have warned of "danger to life" conditions as Storm Eowyn prepares to unleash hurricane-force winds of up to 90mph across Britain tomorrow.

Expert Nathan Rao cautioned that the fifth named storm of the season could be "a very, very serious storm" with potential for tornadoes.

The Met Office has issued an amber wind alert for parts of northern England and Scotland, effective from 6am to 9pm on Friday.

Forecasters warn that gusts could widely reach 90mph across the affected regions.

"The whole of the country is under Met Office warnings for wind and the north of the country, the northwest and the northeast, just down to the southern point of Scotland, is under an amber warning.

"It's when we move into the the realm of amber warnings that things start to get serious. Yes, this looks like a very, very serious storm. There is also heavy rain with this storm and the risk of snow in the north.

"I have seen also tornadoes in the forecast. Now, this isn't as unusual as you may think. In fact, the UK has more tornadoes per square kilometer than anywhere else in the world.

"We just don't see them. So I wouldn't be surprised if we don't start seeing pictures of tornadoes coming out from the storm tomorrow.

"But other than that, across the whole of the country, tomorrow is a day to stay in because there are going to be some very, very strong winds and some very unpleasant weather on the way."

The Met Office has emphasised there could be "a danger to life" from flying debris in the storm.

Potential impacts from the storm include fallen trees, power outages, dangerous coastal waves and structural damage.

Travel disruption is also expected to be widespread across affected regions.

Looking ahead, Rao warned that Storm Eowyn marks the beginning of an extended period of turbulent weather.

"The storm warnings for Storm Eowyn end tomorrow night. Then there is a brief lull on Saturday," he said.

However, he cautioned that another storm system is approaching on Sunday.

"This hasn't been named yet. This would be Storm Florence, I think. Not been named yet, but another low pressure on the way on Sunday," Rao explained.
