The Sudanese army launched a major offensive in Khartoum on Thursday in an attempt to regain territory previously lost to its rival, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), early in the country’s ongoing civil war. Witnesses reported heavy fighting across bridges linking Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri as the army aimed to dislodge RSF forces entrenched in parts of the capital. This marks the army’s first significant push in months to reclaim RSF-controlled areas, though previous attempts in Omdurman had limited success. The civil war, which began in April 2023 amid a power struggle between RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and army chief Abdel-Fattah Burhan, has devastated Sudan. Tens of thousands have been killed, over 10 million displaced, and famine looms in several regions. The offensive coincides with Burhan’s address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
