The season 4 finale of Ted Lasso is quite an emotional match. From the impact of one character’s death to new beginnings, the Apple TV series delivered a heartfelt seasonal conclusion for each of its main cast members.

Below, Hollywood Life breaks down the entire final episode of season 4. (Warning: spoilers are ahead on the season 4 finale of Ted Lasso)

Will Ted Lasso Have a Season 5?

At the time of publication, Apple has not renewed Ted Lasso for a fifth season yet. But, considering how the streamer and the original cast members pulled a fast one and surprised fans with a fourth season, we shouldn’t give up hope — or as Ted (Jason Sudeikis) says, “Believe!”

What Happens at the End of Ted Lasso Season 4?

A lot happens in the season 4 finale. To break down the episode altogether: Keeley and Roy prepare to have their baby, and he quits AFC Richmond to accept an offer to coach for Chelsea; Nate makes a cameo to see the Lady Greyhounds’ match at Nelson Road; Rebecca and Matthijs get engaged; and Higgins and Rebecca figure out a way to foil Zelda’s hostile takeover attempt.

Roy (Brett Goldstein) is nervous about becoming a dad, and Ted shares some of his fan-favorite, Southern charm advice. Upon accepting Chelsea’s offer to coach the team next season, he walks away from AFC Richmond on a positive note, with Rebecca jokingly telling him that if he ever gets sick of Chelsea’s gigantic budget and resources, that he can come back. He and Keeley (Juno Temple) end the season together and preparing to become parents.

Rebecca, (Hannah Waddingham) however, has a few dramatic shifts at the end of the episode — both good and bad! It’s revealed that she and Higgins have found out about Zelda’s attempt to take over AFC Richmond, and they ensure that Rebecca’s stake is still higher than Zelda’s by just two percent. Rebecca still holds 51 percent of the company, and Zelda winds up with 49.

However, Zelda and Rebecca end the ordeal peacefully. Zelda apologizes for her corruption, and Rebecca looks forward to seeing her at the next shareholders’ meeting.

Then, Rebecca – the former marriage hater whose divorce from her cheating, lying ex-husband, Rupert, tainted the way she viewed love — asks Matthijs to marry her. She even tries to get down on one knee, but her pencil skirt makes the boss lady’s move a bit difficult. So, he finishes the proposal for the both of them, and they happily get engaged.

Why Did They Kill Off Mae in Ted Lasso?

Apparently, the writers of Ted Lasso just thought it was a good time for Mae to go. Actress Annette Badland explained her character’s shocking, heartbreaking exit from the show to Deadline.

“That’s what happens. You’re involved with folks, and they disappear,” she said after the episode 9 premiere. “They go, and she loved her life. She made the very best of her life and really relished it. So she went, I suppose, for her, in the very best way.”

Badland recalled discovering her character’s demise shortly before production began on that episode.

“We were only an episode away filming that. I was shocked,” she admitted. “But I’m very proud being in the show, and I admire Jason. I think the series is so successful because people smell it’s very genuine. The audience know it’s not made cynically. It’s not a product. It’s something Jason wants to say about the world and how we are, so you have to trust that. I don’t know when I’ll die. You just don’t know.”

How Did Ted Lasso’s Dad Die?

Ted’s dad died by suicide. This isn’t the first time the beloved coach has mentioned his father’s death and the effect it had on him growing up. Only this time, his son, Henry, asks his dad how his grandfather died. At first, Ted hesitates to tell Henry the truth, confessing to Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) that he went a little “too serpentine” in the moment.

Later in the episode, Ted works up the courage to tell his son the truth, while also promising to be there for Henry more than he has been.

“I’m sorry I missed so many games this season, but I just want to let you know that I’m gonna shift some stuff around on my side of things and make sure that won’t happen next year. I promise,” Ted tells Henry, later adding, “And there’s actually something else I want to talk about with you. It’s about how your grandfather passed away.”

In season 2, Ted talked about his father’s suicide to Dr Fieldstone while discussing his panic attacks at the time.
