A teen girl in NorCal survived a harrowing sexual assault as she walked to school last Saturday, police said.
The 16-year-old high school student was walking to Alisal High School that morning when a man approached her from behind and sexually assaulted her, the Salinas Police Department said.
The girl fought back against the predator’s advances and fled, they added.
Police found and arrested the suspect, 30-year-old Jose Ramirez Zurita, with the help of surveillance video and witness statements. They used what’s called a Ramey warrant, a special type of arrest warrant a judge can issue before prosecutors file charges.
Salinas cops were seen taking Zurita into the jail as he sported a hoodie and long black hair.
The attack is believed to have been random, as Zurita had no known connection to the victim. The teen’s identity was not released.
Police are asking the public for any information or if anyone has had a similar encounter with Zurita. Those with information are asked to please contact Detective Dorantes at 831-758-7148.
“Please always stay vigilant, be aware of your surroundings, and talk to your kids and young adults about how to remain safe,” Salinas police said.
Alisal High School is part of the Salinas Union High School District.
Salinas is a city within Monterey County and is located just south of the San Francisco Bay Area.
A NorCal alleged child rapist is set to have a hearing later this month after he allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl and then allegedly used DoorDash to order emergency Plan B contraception to the room.
