A prominent Texas attorney demanded sex from a cash-strapped woman in exchange for legally representing her jailbird brother — then never delivered on the promise, according to investigators.
San Antonio criminal defense attorney Neil Calfas, 56, allegedly told the woman, identified as “Julie,” that she could pay him with money or her body after she called seeking legal help in March 2024, according to law enforcement officials, who arrested him Wednesday.
She initially refused but later decided to “go along with it” because she believed the legal lothario could help set her brother free, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety arrest report, cited by news4sanantonio.com
“You or the money,” he allegedly told her.
Calfas was charged Wednesday with solicitation of prostitution and human trafficking.
In a jailhouse call to her brother on March 5 of that year, Julie described an interaction with the lawyer in which he asked for sex and gave her the cash that she used for a phone and rent, according to investigators.
She refused but later told her brother she had “risked it,” which investigators took to mean she had a sexual encounter with Calfas in exchange for legal help.
Julie immediately felt intense regret after the deed — and said she nearly vomited, according to the arrest report.
After the disturbing ordeal, Calfas ultimately never became her brother’s lawyer, helped with his defense or assisted in securing his release on bond, according to investigators.
Calfas later had a conversation with Julie’s inmate brother on March 21, and reportedly told him he should get a public defender because he was “light on funds,” according to kens5.com.
Texas Department of Public Safety investigators raided Calfas’ office Wednesday and removed files, laptops and other evidence before taking him into custody.
The inmate’s name was withheld from the arrest report and “Julie” is a pseudonym.
“[He] enticed Julie to engage in sexual conduct” by offering legal representation or assistance for her brother, investigators said.
The law enforcement agency’s investigation included recorded jail phone calls, interviews with witnesses and court records, according to the department.
Calfas’ combined bail was set at $110,000, and he was being held Thursday at the Guadalupe County jail, according to the San Antonio Express News.
Calfas’ office didn’t immediately return The Post’s call seeking comment Thursday.
