The American Dream now costs $5.3 million over the course of a lifetime and is getting pricier, according to an Oct. 7 report.
The report from Investopedia analyzes eight major milestones — getting married, owning a home, buying new cars, raising two children and sending them to college, retirement, paying for healthcare, owning pets, and taking an annual vacation. The total costs associated with these milestones were $5,320,133 in 2026, a 4.1 percent increase from $5,111,632 in 2025, according to the same report, which reviewed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Looking at each individual milestone, the cost of homeownership increased by 7.7 percent. Similarly, the cost of raising two children and sending them to college increased by 8.9 percent, and the cost of retirement also increased by 2.2 percent, according to the report.

Ahead of Investopedia’s new report, a June 17 Gallup poll found that 46 percent of Americans believe everyone in the country has the opportunity to pursue the American Dream, while 78 percent of Americans believe it is important to strive for the American Dream. Only 69 percent of Americans said they believed they would personally be able to achieve the American Dream.
A total of 28 percent of Americans pointed to financial security or home ownership when describing the American Dream, according to the same poll.
