THE HEALTH OF President Franklin D. Roosevelt was a cause for concern in early 1945. Some days he was solid and alert, the usual animated and witty conversationalist; a few hours later he could have a grey, ashen pallor, almost blue lips, severe shaking in his hands, glassy eyes and a slack jaw.
Conscious of his frailty, probably sensing that the end was near, he spoke to his son Elliot about reviving his marriage. But at the same time he made this almost impossible by renewing his affair with Lucy Mercer, the mistress he had abandoned nearly 30 years earlier when his wife Eleanor threatened the divorce that would have wrecked his political career. Now, with no thought of forcing the votes again, Roosevelt felt free to pursue his romantic relationship. Lucy was a frequent visitor to the presidential retreat at Warm Springs, Georgia, while Eleanor was kept away.
