If you’re surprised, you haven’t been paying attention.
Abdul El-Sayed is a “Defund the Police” socialist who has fantasized about putting an “ogre” (fellow Democrat John Fetterman) on a pike, stumped alongside a 9/11 apologist and constructed an entire campaign around insidious Jew-baiting amid a raging epidemic of antisemitism.
He is also the Democratic nominee for Senate in Michigan after narrowly dispatching establishment favorite Haley Stevens in Tuesday’s primary contest.
El-Sayed’s triumph marks not the beginning of the end for the party’s old guard, but the final nail in its coffin.
After all, the civil war was over before the (relative) moderates ever started fighting it in earnest.
From its inception onward, the rebels would accept only unconditional surrender from center-left Democratic elders, who, in turn, appeased, placated and groveled before their sworn enemies, somehow mistaking them for a friendly faction that could deliver them victories without changing the party’s very nature.
That El-Sayed may cost Democrats the seat he’s running for — and quite possibly control of Congress’ upper chamber for the next two years — is of little consequence to his supporters.
Despite the vast ocean between Stevens’ and Republican nominee Mike Rogers’ politics, they share a worldview in which the United States is, at its core, a great nation built on principles that everyone can get behind.
It’s that premise that El-Sayed’s supporters hope to extinguish once and for all — and they’re willing to lose the occasional election along the way to remake the country in their own ugly image.
Make no mistake, either: they will lose elections.
The last time a Republican won a Senate race in the Great Lakes State was 1994, yet Rogers may well pull it off in the year of our Lord 2026 with the albatrosses of a president whose approval rating is drowning 20,000 leagues under the sea and GOP majorities on Capitol Hill hanging around his neck.
Two recent surveys conducted by the Glengariff Group and the Michigan Information & Research Service peg Rogers’ lead over El-Sayed at ten and three points, respectively.
Meanwhile, next door in Wisconsin, Francesca Hong (of “Cancel Thanksgiving” fame) appears poised to win the Democratic nomination to serve as its next chief executive.
The Democrat she’s seeking to replace, Governor Tony Evers, has already publicly expressed doubt about her prospects of prevailing against Republican Tom Tiffany.
A new Manhattan Institute survey tells us why: the far-left’s agenda on a wide range of issues — from welfare, to immigration, to crime — remains wildly unpopular among the general electorate.
The terrifying qualifier is this: for now.
What those prematurely celebrating El-Sayed and Hong’s potential defeats in November don’t realize is that these radicals and the voting bloc behind them are after bigger fish than statewide midterm races in the Rust Belt.
Of course they’d prefer to take oaths of office come January, but they’re already running ahead of schedule.
They’ve already changed Democratic politics forever by anathematizing the capital-L Liberalism of the 20th and early 21st centuries, let alone moderation or a “third way.”
Just ask California state senator Scott Wiener, who castigated Israel for carrying out a faux genocide only to be hoisted by his own petard.
Or Rep. Adam Smith, who folded like a cheap chair to activists’ demands after they threatened the lives of himself and his family.
Or Stevens, who held a campaign event at a cider house on Monday only to have the taproom issue a statement professing to be “heartbroken” and promising to be “more vigilant” moving forward.
No, really. They said that.
One of America’s two major parties now belongs to these veritable psychopaths, whom the far-left has spent a decade programming to obsess over a murderers’ row of moral panics.
“Trans people are being erased! Israel is committing war crimes! America is complicit! No human is illegal! Abolish the police! Abolish the prisons! Everybody is racist, whether they know it or not!”
These aren’t the eye-rolling inducing shrieks of the fringe, they’re the tenets of one of America’s two major parties’ platform.
The nature of American politics is such that the pendulum is bound to swing in their new vessel’s direction eventually, regardless of how voters might feel about their program in a vacuum.
When it does, it will be the likes of El-Sayed, Hong, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Zohran Mamdani who delight in the spoils.
And the rest of us who pay the price.
