The Riots In France Aren’t What You Think

If you had to pick a country that’s given the Left everything they have demanded as part of its grand campaign to rid the world of social injustice, France would probably sit at the top of the list. 

France has a government-mandated 35-hour work week, so everyone has tons of free time (or else they make a killing in overtime). You never have to stay late at the office in France. But even if you don’t have a job, no worries, you still get “free healthcare” from the cradle to the grave. It’s quite a nice setup, we’re told. 

Never mind the fact that, as a result of these perks, government spending in France accounts for more than 57% of GDP compared to just 24% for the federal government in the United States (even when you add in state and local governments, we’re still well under 40% of GDP). So 57% is a staggering number.

In fact, France spends more on “public social spending, as a share of GDP” than any country in the entire world. France is number one, followed by Austria, Finland, Italy, Belgium, and Germany.

To recap: France is not producing much. The French aren’t working particularly hard. At the same time, they’re taxing everyone into the ground, and spending more on welfare than anyone else. France collects around 70% more tax revenue, relative to the size of its economy, than the United States. In practice, this means that businesses have to pay substantially more taxes for every employee they hire. Personal income taxes are higher. Consumption taxes are dramatically higher. Taxes on stock sales are higher, along with the corporate income tax. 

The result is that no one wants to start a business in France. The employees barely work, and the taxes are cartoonishly high. Therefore, there’s no growth, no innovation, and no good jobs. Other than that, France is a great place to live.

A few years ago, France decided that the crushing tax burden, stagnant economy, and total lack of ambition and innovation weren’t destroying their country fast enough, so they opened the borders. They accepted more than three million foreigners in just the past decade (in a country of only around 69 million people), with many of these foreigners coming from third-world hellholes in Africa. 

At no point in France’s history has the percentage of foreigners, relative to the total population, been so high. And these foreigners, most of them with very low IQs and poor language abilities, had no intention of assimilating into French culture (not that they could, even if they wanted to). But they did have a strong desire to leech off France’s expansive welfare system. Naturally, these foreigners put even more strain on an economy, which was already in free fall. 

Such a fragile and poorly-run country simply cannot survive any kind of significant shock. There’s no margin for error. Any crisis was always going to put France into a tailspin. In 2020, during the COVID lockdowns, the European Central Bank printed trillions of Euros, causing inflation in every aspect of life. More recently, due to the war in the Middle East and the Ukrainian bombing campaign against diesel infrastructure in Russia, the cost of energy (which affects the price of virtually everything) has only increased further.

All of that footage is from Paris over the past few days. Rioters from a range of demographics, including white Antifa communists and black Muslims from Africa, have united to sack Paris and terrorize the rest of France. Shops are being looted and ransacked all over the country. Police officers are getting attacked in the streets, and instead of responding to the rioters, the police are running away. 

In one case, a rioter torched a woman’s face with a flamethrower on camera. More than a third of high schools in France have been disrupted since the start of the month. Demonstrations and riots stretch across 40 cities, with an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 participants. It’s every bit as horrifying as it sounds. 

We need to discuss how the media is presenting these riots. It doesn’t matter if you’re watching CNN or FOX in this country: you’re being told that the chaos in France is the result of a “student protest” over a lack of “staff and resources” in the government-run school system. Here’s a recent CNN article, for example.

Pupils had joined their teachers to protest a lack of staff and resources. When their demands were met and extra staff sent to the school, the strike ended, but by then the match had been lit. According to student leader Manès Nadel, it spread like wildfire. … The violence and the speed with which the protests have grown have taken many by surprise, but the grievances are long-standing — an overcrowded, ill-equipped, and understaffed education system that many students feel is no longer fit for purpose. Videos have circulated for years showing classrooms with too few desks or chairs, or students finding their classes cancelled when an absent teacher is not replaced.

CNN goes on to claim that “pupils” are responsible for setting trash cans on fire, assaulting police officers, and manning their own barricades to block traffic on the roads. So it’s a student demonstration over school policy, basically. Nothing to see here. This has been the messaging from every major corporate media outlet in the United States, and it’s been effective. If you ask a random person what’s going on in France right now, odds are, they’ll tell you one of two things: Either they have no idea (which is the most likely response), or they’ll repeat the lie that this is basically a student demonstration.

Suspiciously, these French students don’t look very French at all. They look an awful lot like students from, say, the Congo, if the Congo had schools and students, which it doesn’t.

So it’s clear that this is something quite a bit more than a student protest. And in that way, this is nothing new. In our documentary on the Russian Revolution, which is out now on YouTube, we talk about how communist agitators in the early 20th century were very adept at latching onto student demonstrations and converting them into full-blown Bolshevik riots.

Students in Russia would have some dumb grievance, and the communists would immediately swoop in, spread propaganda, organize rallies, and broaden the messaging. This is how a relatively small number of Bolsheviks suddenly became a very large and dangerous mob. Meanwhile, to all outward appearances, the mob appeared to be “student-led” and grassroots. That’s how the Bolsheviks could portray the riots, anyway. It gave them more credibility.

Something similar is happening in France right now. Take a look at this report from a state broadcaster in France to get an idea of how they’re spinning it. I’m not fond of the term “gaslighting,” but if the term means anything, it applies to this report. It’s one of the most extraordinary pieces of propaganda you’ll ever see:

Yes, they’re “peacefully blockading local roads.” That’s a real sentence, from France’s state broadcaster. Actually, there’s no such thing as “peacefully blockading a road.” You cannot peacefully blockade a road any more than you can peacefully rob a bank. This is an inherently forceful act. Violent by definition. 

If you block people’s cars, without any lawful justification for doing so, then you are kidnapping them. You are committing a violent act by stranding them in their cars, against their will, and preventing them from going anywhere. If anyone in those cars is having a medical emergency, you are endangering their lives.  

When thugs “blockade roads,” which happens all the time in third-world countries, they are not engaging in any form of protest, much less a “peaceful” protest. They are engaging in domestic terrorism. In a sane society, the people they’re kidnapping would have the legal right to use any force necessary to escape, particularly since the police have clearly given up on enforcing the law in France.

Somehow, that’s not even the most bizarre part of this propaganda video, which, as you saw, featured multiple protesters wearing face diapers, presumably so that they don’t contract the latest strain of long COVID. The woman was at least somewhat honest about why she’s there. She complains about the world “burning” or whatever, but her actual concern is that she’s poor. She has no income, no savings, and no job. 

That’s the crisis that’s motivating her and many of the other native-born French protesters who are showing up to these demonstrations. We can talk about the Muslim foreigners who are rioting, and we will. But we can’t ignore the fact that a lot of white French people are actually drawn to these riots because, in their mind, communism is a potential solution to the fact that they’re broke. Or at least, they think more government spending might somehow fix their problems. You heard it from one of the young white students in the previous clip, where he said he’s complaining, in part, about an alleged “lack of school resources.”

But as we just established, France is already spending almost all of its money on various public programs, including its school system. France spends much more money on average, per high school student, than other countries in Europe. Specifically, they spend around 35% more per high school student than the average country in the EU. They spend more than Britain, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. 

Again, in general, they’re spending far more money on social services than they should be. This cannot be emphasized enough: The demonstrations that are taking place right now in France are proof that, no matter how much money you funnel to “government services” and welfare programs, the Left will always demand more. Sixty percent of the GDP is not enough for them. They demand that 100% of GDP go towards social services, meaning handouts. They want taxes to go even higher. At no point will anyone on the Left have the obvious realization that they are poor precisely because they already have high taxes and high government spending. That would require a degree of introspection. It would require some understanding of economics and history, particularly the history of communism. 

These people are trapped in an endless cycle where they demand more government spending, which only makes their problems worse in the long run. Canadians are trapped in a similar cycle, although the government-run media does its best to hide that fact. The same is true in the UK, where the BBC just did the “mostly peaceful” routine to describe these riots, even as they showed video of cars being set on fire:

To the extent that they’re covering these riots at all, this is the line that the mainstream press is using. Whether it’s the state media in the UK or France, they’re telling us that the riots are “mostly peaceful.”

It’s important to note that, indeed, the footage the French broadcaster showed was real. There are some peaceful protests taking place throughout France. They have these demonstrations every year, where they assemble, sing some songs, and lament how poor they are without ever bothering to figure out why they’re poor. There’s nothing abnormal about that, even if it’s dumb. What is abnormal, and what the state broadcaster is lying about by omission, is the degree of pathological, unhinged violence that many of these so-called “protesters” are engaging in.

It’s a bit like how, in the U.S., every street named after MLK is somewhere you don’t want to be after dark. They just lit the entire school on fire. As best I can tell, this school is located in the French city of Nantes, which is on the other side of the country from Paris. So this is a very wide-ranging protest, you might say. 

To put it mildly, there’s plenty of “mostly peaceful protesting” going on. You see, the students are just really upset that they don’t have enough school supplies. They’re protesting the low salaries of the teachers and administrators. That’s why they burned down their school. It makes perfect sense.

Presumably, that’s also why the rioters torched this famous town hall in southwestern France:

It had been standing since 1883. It survived two World Wars. But the new crop of foreigners and communists in France was too much. And indeed, when you look closely at who exactly is committing the violence, it’s overwhelmingly foreigners who have invaded France, along with Antifa-type communists who are aligned with them. The typical native-born French citizens aren’t committing the violence. Instead, they seem profoundly confused about why it’s happening.

To illustrate that point, take a look at this footage from the Telegraph, which depicts a liberal white woman who’s stunned and completely blown away as she watches the mob destroy and loot what appears to be her shop in an upscale area:

According to the Telegraph’s translation, she’s saying: “Why are you doing this? Stop! Why are you doing this? This isn’t the issue.” 

She looks like a pit bull owner who can’t believe her dog is currently ripping her leg off. 

It’s a picture everyone should see, because it encapsulates about as well as any photo can the reason why so many Western nations are collapsing. On the one hand, you have extremely motivated, dedicated, and violent barbarian hordes that will eagerly risk their own lives to conquer and plunder foreign lands. They will use force to get what they want. 

On the other hand, you have very passive Westerners, including many women, who allowed all of this to happen. They voted to enable the welfare state and mass foreign migration because they didn’t think it would destroy their own lives. But when it becomes clear that they were wrong, and it comes time to defend their property, they won’t use force. 

The most they can muster is a very shocked, sad, confused face. They can deliver a somewhat stern lecture. Meanwhile, the mob completely ignores them and takes whatever it wants. The mob that doesn’t care about the rules will inevitably win every single time. They will always defeat the side that hesitates.

I mentioned the Russian Revolution earlier, because we just released our documentary on it. The Bolsheviks won by default, essentially. But this was also a theme of the Civil War in this country. The abolitionists were rabid. They were far more aggressive, and far more violent, than the pro-slavery side. John Brown butchered innocent people in their homes, even people who had nothing to do with slavery. And to this day, the Left reveres John Brown. They make TV shows about him and put his portrait in national history museums. This is how you win any major conflict. 

It sounds like a cliché you’d hear on ESPN, but it’s generally true: The side that wants to win, historically, does end up winning.

For France, despite what President Emmanuel Macron is saying, it’s very obvious that the country is not willing to suppress this uprising with the necessary amount of force. There is some evidence that riot police, in some cases, are dispersing the mob. But there’s much more footage that looks like the following from Paris:

Watching this, especially if you’re the kind of person who generally takes the side of the police, your first reaction might be, “Well, it’s a tactical withdrawal. What else are they going to do?” But it’s actually not complicated at all. They should’ve gotten out of their cars and confronted the rioters. If the rioters responded with violence, the cops should have used whatever force is necessary to neutralize the threat. That’s their job. They’re supposed to bring order to chaos. They have vehicles and firearms, and they’re up against a mob that hasn’t faced any resistance whatsoever. The moment they actually face some resistance, they start to disperse. Take a look at what just happened in Milan, Italy, near the Under Armour store. Milan, like France, is experiencing riots right now (for the same reasons). Eventually, some local store owners decided they had enough:

Notice how, once they use force to stop the rioters, the other rioters don’t do anything about it. Several of them run away. They actually manage to detain one of the rioters and lead him away.

They have the guy on the ground. Then the mob moves in and begins pelting the riot cops, which allows the looter to get away. The police don’t end up making any arrests, so really, they’re not doing anything at all. They’ve released numbers claiming they’ve arrested thousands of people, but based on footage like this, we have no reason to believe them. They serve no purpose, other than to allow the French government to pretend that it’s attempting to suppress the riots. It’s theater. Random guys with batons in Milan are more effective than trained French riot police.

This is all the direct result of government policy. If the French government decided to put an end to this lawlessness, it would end immediately. The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, just made that point:

I’ve heard it said that France is finished, that it’s too late to save her.  But France remains just as beautiful, enviable even. Her greatness hasn’t vanished; it only awaits rebirth. We overcame, in a single year, a problem a hundred times more severe, without having the resources at France’s disposal. France could manage it in a week.

Yes, this would involve the suspension of some “due process rights.” It would potentially produce some unsettling social media footage. The human-rights NGOs wouldn’t be happy if France sent millions of Africans back home and threw all of these communist rioters into a dungeon. 

On the other hand, France would continue to exist as a country. It wouldn’t be another dysfunctional colony of Africa where, by the way, the cities are getting bigger every year, even as Africans get poorer and more violent. It’s the only continent on the planet where, as cities grow, things get worse. And it’s because they can’t figure out infrastructure, or farming, or any of the advanced technologies that are required to scale a city. Once they kicked the white people out of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), total collapse followed. The French can look forward to the same fate, unless they take Bukele’s advice.

It’s not as if these criminals are capable of fighting back in the face of a sustained, serious government crackdown. This is the typical rioter we’re talking about here, and this is the IQ level we’re dealing with:

You might want to laugh at that guy hurting himself — and you should — but it becomes considerably less funny when you consider that one of the great Western nations has allowed itself to be conquered by people 30 IQ points dumber than them on average. Watching these videos, you have to think some kind of serious crackdown is inevitable. These rioters are both insanely violent and depraved, and also insanely stupid. This has been going on for a while now, and some of the footage is so disturbing and so over-the-top that it obviously demands an extreme response. This is from a couple of weeks ago in Marseille, for example:

There are plenty of videos like this. It led The Atlantic (of all places) to condemn the protests as an expression of “nihilistic resentment.” But of course, in the same breath, The Atlantic attacked Donald Trump for blaming Islam and foreign migration. They pointed out that France has riots all the time, and this isn’t any different.

But these riots are different, as the footage demonstrates. This is from a student rioter at Honoré-de-Balzac high school near Paris:

In case your French isn’t up to snuff, he called for murdering police officers in the name of Allah. “There are only ten of them. In the name of Allah, we can kill them all,” he says. Then the crowd cheered. Along the same lines, here are some white French high school students, blocking the entrance to their school and singing a song that references the Bataclan massacre, when Islamists mowed down dozens of people.

But remember: This is a protest because of “the cost of living.” It’s really about “school supplies.” These people just want some more glue sticks and No. 2 pencils for the classroom. That’s all. That’s also why they’re defiling this statue of Joan of Arc in Paris, as you can see here:

It’s the same thing you see in every Muslim conquest. They go after any item of religious or cultural significance. The Muslim-owned businesses aren’t being touched, by the way. They’re not destroying everything at random. They’re targeting white people and Christianity, in particular. And they’re very well-practiced and manipulative as they do it. Look at what happened when a white guy told the mob to stop destroying local businesses. They quickly surround him and call him a racist as they run him off:

Tucker Carlson got in a lot of trouble for saying something like this, but it’s true: This isn’t how white people tend to fight. It’s not how they win arguments. This completely undignified mob intimidation, and mob violence in some cases, is much more common in the Third World. They don’t have any shame about, say, kicking a guy in the back while he defends his own store, which just happened to one shop owner:

That guy presumably runs the store, or invested a lot of his life into it. It’s apparently an anime store or a games store or something like that. Then one day these third-world thugs show up and trash the place. He demonstrates some courage and tries to run them off, and they jump-kick him in the back. They throw rocks at him and jeer.

The hallmarks of day-to-day life become scenes of grotesque, almost comically deranged violence and depravity. You can’t even do a TV hit on the side of the road in Paris anymore without third-worlders jumping in front of the camera and making various profane, threatening gestures, as one news crew found out:

We could spend the next five hours going through footage like this. It’s one of the most disgraceful and disturbing moments in the history of Europe. But Democrats in this country don’t see it that way. Here’s Ro Khanna of California, for example, who represents Silicon Valley in Congress (which is ironic, because he’s trying to destroy California’s entire economy):

From the high schools of France to the streets of Madrid to the universities of Tirana, young people are telling their governments the same thing: in an age of massive wealth inequality, they want a future they can believe in. In France, students and teachers are asking for safe schools, enough teachers and smaller classes. … In America, let us listen to our young. We need an economic and political transformation. America’s Next New Deal.

In other words, he’s saying we need communist riots in this country. We need to see businesses razed to the ground, innocent people getting terrorized in the streets, and religious statues getting defiled, all in the name of an “Economic and political transformation.” But what would that look like, exactly? It would look a lot like France. They spend dramatically more than we do on “social services” and “equality.” And now they’re rioting because it’s unsustainable. Ro Khanna and the Democrat Party explicitly want to destroy the United States. There is no getting around it at this point.

And not just that, they also want to imprison their political opponents, as all communists do. What they did to Donald Trump and his advisors, in the run-up to the last election, was just a sampling of what they have planned. Here’s Elissa Slotkin, the Democrat Senator from Michigan, making the threat explicit:

This is a sitting Democrat senator, saying that in her view, the job of the federal government is to terrorize Republicans to the point that they don’t want to work for Republican administrations anymore. These people have believed this for a very long time, but now they’re admitting it in public. And we all see this in our everyday lives, as well. Typical Democrat voters are now much more vengeful and frankly dangerous than they’ve ever been. Their political leaders are calling for violence, and they’re happy to oblige.

If you vote for a Democrat, any Democrat, this is the ideology you’re supporting. You are voting for more social spending, more political crackdowns, more censorship, and more foreign invaders. In doing so, you’re voting for exactly what they have in France, which is a lawless hellhole that’s becoming more and more indistinguishable from Africa by the day. Therefore, whatever you think of the Trump administration, or the Republican Party in general, the midterms do not present a difficult choice at all. One side is for civilization; the other wants to destroy it. This is a realization that occurred to the English philosopher Roger Scruton, as he saw the riots in Paris in the 1960s:

It’s tempting to dive deep into the minutiae of various legislation or policy proposals, but sometimes, it really is this simple and straightforward. One party is telling you that it wants to import lawlessness, destruction, and social decay. They’re doing exactly what Christopher Hitchens warned us about: they’re holding open the gates for the barbarians:

“Resist it while you still can… the barbarian never take the city until someone holds the gates open for them and it’s your own preachers and multicultural authorities who’ll do it for you…”

“Resist it while you still can,” Hitchens says. What does that look like in practice? It means taking a look at Japan. It means shutting down migration and preserving your national heritage, your religious traditions, and your culture. 

Indeed, there is objective evidence that this administration understands that:

The New York Times, not a friendly source, just reported that the Trump administration has cut legal immigration more than any administration since the 1920s. That was the Coolidge administration (which we’re going to cover in an upcoming episode of Real History, along with the rest of the immigration restrictions of the 1920s). Immigration from Muslim and African nations is down around 90%. Visas from Asia are down. These are meaningful victories. They’re the reason we have a chance of remaining a functioning country, where so many other Western nations have fallen.

The reason they’re all lying about what’s happening in France right now, the reason the media is pretending some students are just upset about school funding, is that they understand the stakes. 

They understand that, if most Americans understood how quickly our streets could turn into Paris, Democrats would never win another election (or at least, no honest election). 

Preventing Democrats from opening the gates for these barbarians should be the single most important priority of every American voter from this moment forward because if they win, as the shopkeepers have discovered in France, we’ll all be on our own.
