SECRETARY STANTON TO GEN. DIX.

WAR DEPARTMENT, WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 -- 9:30 P.M.

To Major-Gen Dix, New-York:

Dispatches down to 9 o'clock last night have been received from Gen. SHERIDAN. A portion of the rebel cavalry, having turned off to Front Royal, were pursued, attacked and driven by our cavalry, which were still pursuing the enemy.

The rebel infantry made a stand at Flint Hill, a strongly intrenched position beyond Strasburgh, which was attacked by our forces last evening, and the crest carried and held by our troops. There is reason to believe that later dispatches were captured last night by MOSBY near Winchester.

Gen. STEVENSON reports that SHERIDAN's supply trains arrived safely at Winchester last night.

EDWIN M. STANTON, Secretary of War.

NEAR STRASBURGH, Wednesday, Sept. 21, via WASHINGTON, Thursday, Sept. 22.

The victory of Monday was more complete than at first supposed. The enemy's loss in prisoners alone it is now believed will reach five thousand. They were pursued to Tumbling Run without serious opposition, our cavalry picking up hundreds of wounded stragglers and demoralized men on the way.

As the enemy passed through the main street of Winchester, numberless Union ladies, who waved Union flags, sarcastically asked the Johnnys what they were running for, as nothing but Yankees were after them.

To-day, Gen. SHERIDAN's headquarters are near Strasburgh. The enemy will doubtless make a stand at Tumbling Run. A movement has already been inaugurated to oust them from this position. Our troops, as may be supposed, are in good spirits, and each man seems to feel the importance of the occasion.

Our prisoners, it is now believed, will number 5,000, exclusive of wounded men. The rebel Gens. RODES, LOMAX and GOODWIN were killed.
