The top three sex positions revealed as experts explain why they deliver the most pleasure

There are countless sex positions, but there are a core three that sexologists would put at the top.

DailyMail.com spoke with Sophie Roos, a sexologist and relationship therapist, Dr. Jess O’Reilly, PhD,  Lovehoney’s Sexologist, and Zachary Zane, the sex and relationship expert for #LubeLife, to learn about the top three favorites.

Dr. Jess also noted that bodies and desires are unique and 'there are no universally pleasurable sex positions.'

'What works for some may not work for others. And what works for you today may be different than what happens to feel good in five days, five months or five years.'

1. Missionary

All three experts agreed that despite the assumptions around missionary, it is still one of the best.

Sofie explained: 'Yup - one of the world's most popular sex positions, and no, this is not a boring one, but actually one of the best and most pleasurable sex positions for both the giver and the receiver!

'The basics of missionary are easy - it’s simple to have, feels natural and the pleasure is high; but the simplicity is also what makes it so good when it comes to modifying it to make the position suit just what you want.

'You can put up the feet of the one being under on the other person’s shoulders for a deeper angle, you can use a pillow under the lumbar spine of the receiver to get contact with the g-spot, the penetrator can be hugged by the legs of the one being penetrated, or you can roll over and have the missionary on the side - perfect for lazy Sunday sex!'

She added: 'Missionary is an awesome sex position for experimenting with different angles until you find something that feels best for you - so be playful!

'It’s also easy to involve lots of erogenous zones, such as the clitoris or the balls by using your hands or using your tongue on your partner's ears, lips, throat, or nipples. 

'Also don’t underestimate being close face to face, hearing each other’s breathing and kissing when you can’t resist each other anymore!'

Dr. Jess also chimed in saying, 'Missionary is far from boring.' 

'In fact, for many, it’s a reliable source of pleasure and orgasms.' 

She gave a suggestion to make the position feel even better. 

'Try the CAT [Coital Alignment Technique]: the lower partner [on their back] squeezes their legs together while the upper partner slides their body up a little,' she explained.

'The CAT allows you to align your bodies so you can grind the external clitoris against your partner's pubic bone and/or the lower shaft of the penis or strap-on.'

Zachary argued to FEMAIL that, 'Missionary is classic for a reason.'

'Despite its reputation, it is anything but boring. 

'Eye contact? Kissing? It’s an extremely intimate position for people looking to have a connected sexual and emotional experience with a partner.'

2. Doggy Style 

Doggy style is known to be a fan-favorite sex position for many.

Sofie called the position 'an all-time classic.'  

'It goes without saying that it’s one of the world's most popular sex positions for a reason,' she explained.

'This position is both kinky, relatively easy to have, and it feels amazing for both partners because the penis squeezes tight, and it goes in deep.'

She also argued this position also reigns supreme because of the view the penetrator has. 

'The one penetrating also gets an amazing view and the one receiving has their head slightly down which increases the blood flow to the brain - something that can give a nice buzzy feeling making the sex feel more intense.

'And you can change angle, depth, and rhythm in a variety of ways.'

Sofie also detailed that the position is great for 'power play.'  

'The one penetrating gets a natural dominant role and the one receiving is submissive, something many enjoy,' she revealed.

'The fact that this position also feels relatively raw makes many people extra turned on!'

Zachary chimed in with similar views on the beloved position.

'If you like booty [either showing off yours or properly appreciating one], then doggy style is the position for you,' he argued. 

'If you and your partner both like rough sex, you can really go hard in doggy style [and if you’re into hair-pulling, incorporating that, too].'

3. Cowgirl

Sofie and Zachary also agreed that cowgirl was another top sex position.  

'Cowgirl is one of a few sex positions where the one receiving actually is in charge, and stands for the main job and the one with the penis can lay back and take a more passive role,' Sofie explained to DailyMail.com.

'This also gives the rider more control, and therefore higher chances of receiving really great pleasure!

'The one riding can decide rhythm, angle, and depth, making it a great one, especially for women who want to orgasm from penetrative sex since they can ride and rub against the penis in a way that stimulates the g-spot or clitoris until they reach all the way!'

She also gave some advice for making cowgirl better for the woman on top. 

'[She can] rub back and forth against the penis root so the clitoris gets stimulation instead of going up and down,' she detailed.

'This technique is easiest to master if [you're] standing on [you're] feet instead of knees, and taking help from the one penetrating by taking support from their chest, and by them putting their hands around your hips for extra support!'

The sexpert also suggested ways to vary the popular position. 

'Other ways to vary cowgirl is by the one being under lays and sits in different ways, for example by laying straight, leaning against the wall or by sitting in a chair or on a sofa,' she advised.

Sofie added: One should also not forget that cowgirl is a highly intimate sex position since you’re looking at each other all the time, can come close and hug as well as stimulate tons of erroneous zones, such as the nipples, the neck or behind the throat.'

Zachary added that 'You get a great view of your partner in this position, and it’s also easy to use sex toys for additional clitoral stimulation from this position.'
