American voters are weighing in on tariffs as President Donald Trump has enacted some of the most dramatic changes in economic trade policy with foreign countries this week.

Trump has already imposed a 25 percent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, with an exception of a ten percent tariff on energy.

He also imposed a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports and imposed an additional ten percent tariff on goods from China.

A new DailyMail.com poll, conducted with J.L. Partners, shows that voters are still unsure about tariffs.

Less than 40 percent support more tariffs on various imported products from foreign countries, although roughly 30 percent of voters remain unclear of how they feel about them.

Thirty-nine percent of voters in the poll support more tariffs on precious metals, pearls and stones, 37 percent support them on plastics.

Other tariffs most supported by Americans include vehicles, machinery and iron and steel.

The tariffs that remain the least popular are on pharmaceutical products, clothing, and furniture.

The tariffs with the least amount of trade deficit between foreign countries are the ones that lave the least support, the poll shows.

The three products with the highest support for tariffs are ones with a surplus or small deficit.

The poll was conducted March 5-7 among a sample of 1,019 registered voters with a 3.4 percent margin of error.

Trump will likely need to do more to promote the benefits of tariffs to the American people as they remain largely tepid toward the idea.

Forty-three percent of voters want him to focus primarily on tackling inflation but just nine percent feel the same way about tariffs.

President Trump has repeated that tariffs will enrich the country, bringing in more revenue for the government and encouraging companies to return their businesses and jobs to the United States/

'I think the tariffs are going to be the greatest thing we've ever done as a country. It's going to make our country rich again,' he told reporters on Sunday.

'We're going to take in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs and we're going to become so rich you're not going to know where to spend all that money. I'm telling you. You just watch,' he added.

Vice President JD Vance argued Friday that the tariffs were necessary if the United States was serious about returning American jobs and manufacturing back to the United States.

Vance lamented that since the 1990s, the United States had lost 5 million manufacturing jobs, and saw over 90,000 American factories close, thanks to free trade policies pursued by past administrations.

'Thank God we have a president that thinks we’re going to bring it back, and we are,' he concluded.
