The co-hosts on ABC’s “The View” recently praised former First Lady Michelle Obama after it was announced that she would not be attending President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday. Obama also did not attend the funeral of late former President Jimmy Carter earlier this month, the only living former first lady not to do so.
In light of this news, co-hosts Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin praised Michelle Obama over the decision not to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Hostin argued that Obama was justified in not attending the ceremony. “I think when they go low, you have to meet that energy and perhaps go even lower, become small like an ant and go to the earth’s crust,” Hostin said, seemingly referring to Obama’s famous quote, “When they go low, we go high.”
When Behar brought up the news that Obama would be absent from the inauguration, Hostin said, “Yes, Lord, she is so right. She is so right.” she continued, “And I think when you see that, you understand why she wouldn’t go.” Furthermore, Hostin cited reports that Obama did not enjoy Trump’s first inauguration because there wasn’t enough “color” or “diversity” at the event.
Hosting continued, “And what I will say is, what I will say is she said that she did not enjoy Trump’s 2017 inauguration because there was no diversity, there was no color on that stage, that there was no reflection of the broader sense of what America looks like. And many people took pictures of her and there, and she just wasn’t in a good mood.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin argued that it was okay for Michelle Obama to skip the event because she isn’t a government figure. However, Griffin suggested former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) should attend, a point that co-host Sarah Haines agreed with. However, Ana Navarro defended Pelosi, citing her recent hip replacement prompted by an injury. However, this has not prevented Pelosi from attending other events, such as a ceremony for Jimmy Carter.
Sources close to Michelle Obama recently shed light on why she would not attend the ceremony. “There’s no overstating her feelings about [Trump]. She’s not one to plaster on a pleasant face and pretend for protocol’s sake,” the source claimed. “Michelle doesn’t do anything because it’s expected or it’s protocol or it’s tradition,” they added.
Furthermore, anonymous sources claimed Michelle’s move was a blatant act of anti-Trump sentiment. “She meant every word she said on the campaign trail with every fiber of her being,” one source told The Hill. “And she’s no hypocrite.” Obama continually slammed Trump throughout the 2024 campaign, suggesting he pushed “ugly, misogynistic, racist lies” and claiming he suffered from cognitive decline.
