Just days before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, a major geopolitical breakthrough occurred when Israel and Hamas struck an agreement to facilitate the release of American and Israeli hostages currently being held in Gaza. Trump took to Truth Social to share the news, citing his decisive victory in November as the catalyst for the development in the conflict.
The move has led some to conclude that peace in the Middle East is ostensibly on the horizon after conflict exploded in the region under the Biden administration, departing from an era of unprecedented peace under Trump’s first presidency. The incoming president’s diplomatic actions in the Middle East were widely celebrated, given accomplishments such as the Abrams Accord.
“We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East. They will be released shortly. Thank you!” Trump announced on Truth Social on Wednesday. Trump had previously issued a stark warning that if the hostages were not returned by the time he returned to the White House, that “all hell will break out.” The president-elect’s warning appears to have been heeded as the deal will take place hours before his inauguration ceremony.
Trump wrote in another statement, “This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November, as it signaled to the entire World that my Administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans, and our Allies. I am thrilled American and Israeli hostages will be returning home to be reunited with their families and loved ones.”
“With this deal in place, my National Security team, through the efforts of Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, will continue to work closely with Israel and our Allies to make sure Gaza NEVER again becomes a terrorist safe haven,” the incoming president stated. “We will continue promoting PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH throughout the region, as we build upon the momentum of this ceasefire to further expand the Historic Abraham Accords. This is only the beginning of great things to come for America, and indeed, the World!”
The message concluded, “We have achieved so much without even being in the White House. Just imagine all of the wonderful things that will happen when I return to the White House, and my Administration is fully confirmed, so they can secure more Victories for the United States!”
Trump made an unapologetic statement last week, sending a stern message to Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement. “If those hostages, aren’t back I don’t want to hurt you, negotiation, if they’re not back by the time I get into office, all hell will break out in the Middle East, and it will not be good for Hamas and it will not be good frankly for anyone, all hell will break out I don’t have to say anymore, but that’s what it is,” he said. Reportedly, the release will occur in several stages where both Israel and Hamas will exchange hostages from either side.
