TikTok has intensified content moderation in Kenya, removing 360,000 videos in Q2 2024 due to violations of community guidelines, particularly sexually explicit content. This figure surpasses the 296,000 videos taken down in all of 2023. Prior to that, Kenya’s parliament had received a petition asking it to ban the platform. However, the country’s technology ministry argued for enhanced regulation instead, prompting TikTok to issue quarterly compliance reports. TikTok’s crackdown is a response to this move. Concerns center around sexually explicit material, ethnic incitement, and violent content. Additionally, TikTok banned nearly 60,000 Kenyan accounts, many of which belonged to users under 13, for violating its terms of service. The company credits enhanced technology for its improved ability to identify harmful content, with 99.1% of this content removed before users reported them.
