The cost of living is up, prompting a growing number of Americans to flee big cities and opt for small-town life instead. A tiny, tight-knit community might seem like heaven to those who want a slower pace of life, but that doesn’t mean that smaller towns are sleepy, cultural wastelands. Many towns across the country offer the same top-notch amenities found in larger cities—they just come with a more laid-back, know-your-neighbors vibe at an affordable price tag.

Altoona? Srsly? So many places in PA like Muncy, Wellsboro, Jim Thorpe, etc. and they pick Altoona? Sheesh.

My brother lives near Kearney NE. It is a great place to live and (mostly) affordable.
There is a VA medical center. Unless troubles comes in from Lincoln or Omaha, there are few problems.
There is meth, and crime from that. But one can stay away from all the trouble with minimal effort.
Having said that, not much industry except off the farms.
Is the list a joke? Probably not, but the authors probably did all of their research off the web.

There are thousands of small towns all over this country that would be great to live in. Of all the towns listed, they are not all that small. I consider small anything under 5000.

On second thought, Atlantic City? Fairbanks AK?
Yeah, this was generated by some person that visited these towns on the web.
And they could have driven from NYC to Atlantic City on a day trip! Is what is left of Atlantic City worth living in?

I was in Fairbanks last week. Not too bad, but the outdoors generally isn’t as scenic once you get north of Denali.
I agree that the lack of southern towns is an issue. I can think of a lot of towns in Tennessee and North Carolina that I would much rather prefer.

These are not “small towns”. Most of these are small cities. Atlantic City? Most of us have an idea what the good neighborhoods are, and some of them are NOT cheap. (Actually, I seem to remember that Pacific Avenue, which was high brow in 1935, is now a bit of a red light district). Springfield, IL is a state capital, and has over 100,000 people. So does, Sandusky, Ohio.

Fairbanks in January? Dark and frigid.

One should do one’s own research.
Find a property you like in a State with no Income Tax near a town with at least a minimum of retail services you want/need to live your lifestyle without much driving and close enough to outdoor activities of interest...
