Can Ange Postecoglou’s side back up an impressive winwith another UEFA Europa League victory? We look ahead to Thursday’s clash with our Tottenham vs Roma prediction and preview.

Tottenham vs Roma: The Key Insights

  • The Opta supercomputer backs Tottenham to beat Roma in a convincing 56.5% of pre-match simulations.
  • Spurs have lost just one of their 10 home games against Italian sides in all competitions.
  • Roma have won only one of their 23 away matches against English sides in all competitions.

Ange Postecoglou will have to bring Tottenham back down to earth when they host Roma in Thursday’s Europa League clash.

Spurs produced the best result of the Postecoglou era with a 4-0 hammering of Manchester City the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.

James Maddison’s first-half double set the tone before Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson were on target after the interval to seal an eye-catching victory at the Premier League champions.

The victory was made even more impressive considering Spurs had to operate with backup options Ben Davies and Radu Drâgusin as centre-backs, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero out injured. Richarlison, Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert will be the other absentees on Thursday.

Tottenham’s attention now turns back to this European competition, in which they sit seventh in the Europa League league phase table – some 13 places ahead of their Italian visitors.

Postecoglou’s side fell to a 3-2 defeat away to Galatasaray in their last outing in Europe, with goals from Will Lankshear – who was later sent off – and Dominic Solanke not enough at the Turkish giants.

Home comforts are aplenty for Spurs, however. They have won their last seven home matches in the Europa League without conceding a single goal and scoring 19 themselves.

Johnson has been central to Tottenham’s endeavours in this competition. The former Nottingham Forest winger has been directly involved in three goals in four Europa League games this season (two goals, one assist). That is the most by a Welsh player in a campaign in the competition since Gareth Bale in 2020-21, also for Spurs (three goals, one assist).

Roma have just five points to their name in this 2024-25 edition. Across all competitions, the Serie A side are also winless in their last four matches after a 1-0 defeat to Napoli last time out.

Club legend Claudio Ranieri has been brought in to turn things around, with struggles persisting at both ends of the pitch. Despite completing the most passes (2,199) in the Europa League this season, they’ve only netted three goals.

Only Ludogorets (one goal for every 1,096 successful passes) have a worse goals-per-successful pass ratio than Roma (one every 733 passes) among teams to have scored once in the competition so far.

Ranieri will be without Alexis Saelemaekers and Eldor Shomurodov for this clash, while Mario Hermoso will likely face a late fitness test due to a muscle issue.

Tottenham vs Roma Head-to-Head

This will be the first competitive meeting between these two sides, though Spurs have enjoyed facing Roma’s fellow Serie A clubs.

Indeed, Tottenham have lost just one of their 10 home games against Italian sides in all competitions (W5 D4), going down 2-1 against Juventus in March 2018.

By contrast, Roma have won only one of their 23 away games against English sides in all competitions (D8 L14), and are winless in 15 such matches since a 1-0 win at Liverpool in February 2001.

Tottenham vs Roma Prediction

The Opta supercomputer backed Tottenham as the favourites for this clash – the hosts won a convincing 56.5% of 10,000 pre-match simulations.

Roma were only victorious in 21.0% of the same data-led sims, with the draw more likely at 22.5%.
