Toyota South Africa has launched pilot production of its next-generation Hilux pickup truck after completing more than 77% of a $634 million investment program at its Durban manufacturing plant. The project, scheduled for completion in June 2027, includes major factory upgrades, advanced robotics, expanded logistics facilities, and a new chassis treatment center designed to support cleaner and more efficient production. Once fully operational, Toyota aims to manufacture around 140,000 vehicles annually, supplying both the domestic market and export destinations across Europe and Africa. The redesigned truck will feature upgraded safety and driver-assistance technology. The company said the investment demonstrates Toyota Motor Corporation’s long-term confidence in South Africa despite mounting industry challenges.
