The trailer for a new Tim Allen sitcom called “Shifting Gears” just dropped, getting fans excited to see the 71-year-old’s return to television.
The new series will premiere on ABC on January 8. Per the show’s description, Allen stars as Matt, “the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
“Shifting Gears” will be a return to ABC for Allen, who is best known for starring on the sitcom “Home Improvement” in the 1990s and more recently in “Last Man Standing.” The latter series was canceled in 2017 after six seasons but then moved to Fox and aired for three more seasons.
Other cast members include Seann William Scott as Gabriel and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch. Riley’s two children, Carter and Georgia, are played by Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis.
“Is that my GTO? I built that thing 15 years ago and somebody stole it,” Allen as Matt says in the trailer upon encountering a run-down car pulling into his garage. Riley gets out with her kids and says, “Hey Dad,” to which Allen replies, “And there is the thief!”
Back at Matt’s house, he recalls how when Riley left, she “looked back and gave me the double bird.” Riley responds, “I was 18 — the double bird is how I ended all our conversations.”
“I’m crawling home because I’m broke and need a place to stay until I figure out what the rest of my life looks like,” Riley tells her dad.
“You guys can stay here,” he says. Riley replies, “Really? Because I haven’t changed a lot!”
“Neither have I!” Matt says.
Other scenes indicate that their relationship rebuilding won’t be easy. “Can we try to talk to each other like rational adults?” Riley asks her dad. Matt quips, “Have you watched the news lately? That’s not a thing anymore.”
Most of the comments on the trailer express excitement over the project.
“So happy to see Tim Allen and Kat Dennings back in another sitcom and I love the fact that both are working together. I’m definitely gonna be tuning in to watch this sitcom cause two of my favorite people are in it,” one YouTube commenter wrote.
“Cannot wait! ABC used to be the home for the family comedy, and I truly hope this show is supported and does well,” another person shared.
“Tim Allen is back,” another person agreed.
