DENVER — The Trump-Vance campaign has sent a letter to Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold demanding that the processing of many mail-in ballots in the state be temporarily halted.
The letter, posted on Donald Trump’s campaign website, cited the recent incident where partial passwords connected to the state’s voting systems were posted on the Secretary of State’s website.
“This disclosure directly violates the law and undermines the integrity of our elections,” the demand on the Trump campaign website said.
The letter demanded that Griswold’s office immediately identify the counties that were affected and order a new trusted build. This is something that the Secretary of State’s office uses to ensure the security of voting systems.
According to the original accusation by the Colorado GOP, passwords for around 63 of Colorado’s 64 counties were allegedly posted on the office’s website since August.
The campaign letter also demands that the counties affected stop processing all mail ballots they receive and prepare to re-scan all mail ballots that have already been scanned.
According to the demand, this would not disrupt the voting process, “as counties are not permitted to disclose results until 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.”
“We recognize these steps may be an inconvenience for your office and for the affected counties,” the demand letter by law firm Gessler Blue LLC said. “But this inconvenience is necessary because it is the only way to guarantee that the elections equipment in those counties … are secure.”
Matt Crane, the executive director of the Colorado County Clerks Association, spoke to FOX31’s Greg Nieto about the password posting.
“This is a legitimate problem, no way to sugarcoat this. This is a legitimate problem,” he told Nieto. “We want voters to know there are multiple levels of security involved, and we feel very confident in our systems.”
How Colorado officials are responding to the password publish Griswold told FOX31 on Wednesday that the employee “responsible for hiding the tabs on the spreadsheet” no longer works with the agency.
Gov. Jared Polis and Griswold released a joint statement Thursday and said additional state resources would be deployed to ensure election security after the passwords were posted.
The statement said people will only enter badged areas in pairs to update the passwords for election equipment in counties, “And will be directly observed by local elections officials from the county clerk’s office.”
“The goal is to complete the password updates by this evening and verify the security of the voting components, which are secured behind locked doors by county clerks,” the statement said.
The Secretary of State’s Office also adopted temporary election rules on Thursday, so that employees can carry out the tasks detailed in the joint statement. According to the statement for justification, the new rules are necessary to avoid a delay in the password changes.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5. In Colorado, the local certification deadline for the election is Nov. 27, and the state must certify the election results by Dec. 2.
As of Thursday, 1,592,308 mail-in ballots have been returned across the state, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. 33,533 people have also voted in person.
