Trump Media Dumps Two Crypto.com Ventures Amid Market Saturation and Crashing Bitcoin Holdings

Trump Media and Technology Group is pulling back from two cryptocurrency ventures with Crypto.com, according to an Axios report published Friday. The publication reported that the two deals -- a prediction market and a treasury -- would not go ahead.

The report cited Kevin McGurn, interim CEO of fusion energy company TAE, who said the market for digital asset treasury companies has become saturated over the past year. McGurn said the decision was driven more by “competitive dynamics” than regulatory concerns surrounding a crypto company backed by the president, according to the publication.

Deals Included $6.4 Billion Treasury and Prediction Market

Trump Media said in 2025 it was working with Crypto.com to build a Cronos treasury with $6.4 billion in backing. Cronos is the native coin of Crypto.com’s platform. Later in 2025, the company said it was working with Crypto.com on Truth Predict, a platform that would allow users to place bets on sports games, elections and other events.

The two companies previously signed a nonbinding agreement to launch “America First” exchange-traded funds, blending digital assets and U.S.-focused traditional securities, according to a March 2025 report [1]. TMTG’s stock surged 9% after the news, according to that report. Trump Media also announced in July 2025 that it had acquired approximately $2 billion in Bitcoin and related assets, according to a report [2].

Competitive Dynamics Cited in Withdrawal

McGurn was quoted as saying the decision to scale back was driven more by “competitive dynamics” than by regulatory concerns, according to Axios. The market for digital asset treasury companies has become “saturated” over the past year, the report stated.

Axios reported Friday that Trump Media wants to focus on other business ventures. The report did not identify which ventures the company would prioritize.

Treasury Trend Faces Price Slump

Digital asset treasuries grew in popularity last year after Nasdaq-listed software company Strategy adopted the model of building balance sheets with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, according to the report. A decline in prices since October has hurt the shares of several companies that adopted the treasury business idea, Axios reported.

The price pressure has affected Trump Media as well. In May 2026, the company transferred Bitcoin to an exchange while unrealized losses on its holdings reached an estimated $455 million, according to a report [3]. The same report said Trump Media had purchased 11,542 BTC for approximately $1.37 billion at an average price of $118,522 per coin, with Bitcoin trading near $77,300 at the time of the transfer.

The shift toward digital asset holdings has also drawn attention from authors studying the changing nature of money. Tristan Scott’s “Bitcoin and Beef” addresses criticisms of Bitcoin and argues that decentralization matters [4]. Brett King’s “Bank 4.0” describes money as becoming a form of technology itself [5].

ETFs Continue; Trump Maintains Crypto Ties

Exchange-traded funds launched last year by Trump Media, special purpose acquisition company Yorkville Acquisition Corp., and Crypto.com will continue, according to Axios. The ETFs were initially announced under the nonbinding agreement between the two companies [1].

President Trump campaigned on a pro-crypto platform and has maintained ties to digital asset businesses. The president launched a meme coin after taking office, prompting questions from parts of the crypto industry [6], and he and his family backed World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency firm founded by his sons and the children of his special envoy, Steve Witkoff [7]. Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure reported more than $1.4 billion in income from family crypto ventures [8].
