President Donald Trump has suggested renaming either the Pacific Ocean or Atlantic Ocean, continuing a trend of his administration renaming significant geographical landmarks in the Americas.
While speaking at a rally in Tennessee on Saturday, Trump said, “We’ve got the gulf. We’ve got a beautiful lake. Now, somebody said, you need a river.”
“We need a river, we need an ocean—I was thinking either the Atlantic or Pacific—we’ll call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that,” he said to applause. “Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean and we need a great river.”
So far in his second administration, Trump has renamed multiple bodies of water, other geographical locations, and government buildings.
In August, Trump issued an order that renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America amid a dispute with Canada over trade and other issues, writing that the lake, which sits on the U.S.–Canada border “is a tremendous asset to the United States and part of our Nation’s heritage.”
“With the deepest parts of the Lake’s waters lying within United States territory, the United States claims most of the Lake’s volume,” the order states, adding, “The United States is the greatest protector of the Great Lakes.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed Trump’s order, telling CNN in August that Canadians are “strong believers in being a sovereign country, and when President Trump wants to attack our sovereignty and attack our businesses and people in Ontario, I can’t roll over.”
Starting in late August, Lake America started appearing on Google Maps in the United States.
Trump also signed orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America as well as renaming Alaska’s Mount Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, back to its original name, Mount McKinley, named after President William McKinley.
Earlier this year, he renamed the North Carolina military base Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg. His name was also added to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, commonly known as the Kennedy Center, in Washington, although a judge blocked the administration from adding inscriptions last month.
His name, likeness, and signature have also been added to government issuances such as passports and a U.S. coin. The president also issued the “Trump Gold Card,” a means with which foreign nationals can receive expedited permanent residency status if they donate $1 million to the United States.
The former U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington was renamed in late 2025 to the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. At the time of the renaming, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he “will be remembered by history as the President of Peace. It’s time our State Department display that.”
Over the summer, a South Florida airport officially changed its name on Thursday to the President Donald J. Trump International Airport. Signs for the Palm Beach International Airport have been removed, and new signage has gone up, officials said in July.
“Because an entire airport transformation doesn’t happen overnight, you’ll notice a combination of both our classic look and our new brand elements coexisting while traveling through the terminal over the next several weeks,” the Trump airport officials said in a Facebook post.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation earlier this year that made the airport name change possible.
