CV NEWS FEED // President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he will create a new agency called the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs, duties, and other foreign revenues.

“For far too long, we have relied on taxing our Great People using the Internal Revenue Service (IRS),” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “Through soft and pathetically weak Trade agreements, the American Economy has delivered growth and prosperity to the World, while taxing ourselves. It is time for that to change.”

“I am today announcing that I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources. We will begin charging those that make money off of us with Trade, and they will start paying, FINALLY, their fair share,” he added.

Trump announced that the birth date of the External Revenue Service will be Jan. 20, Inauguration Day.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection currently collects most tariffs.

Trump had previously established his position on raising foreign tariffs to benefit Americans.

In a Nov. 2024 social media post, Trump wrote: “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States….”

CatholicVote reported in December that Trump’s promise was part of an effort to push Mexico and Canada to control immigration and drug trafficking.

EJ Antoni, a research fellow at the Heritage Foundation who specializes in fiscal policy, told the New York Post, “I really, really love this idea.”

“Anything that gets us away from income taxes and towards tariffs is a great idea,” Antoni added.
Following Trump’s win in the November election, CatholicVote reported: “Americans’ confidence in the economy and their financial stability has increased in anticipation of Donald Trump’s second term as president.”
