Cortavion Hobbs, 19, and Cortavious Hobbs, 18, brothers, have been hit with a slew of charges, including each facing counts of attempted capital murder and hindering prosecution over their attack on a sheriff’s deputy in Covington County, Mississippi, an attack that the judge said was the most serious attack on law enforcement in the county in the past century.

As background, Covington County Deputy Yates Rodney was shot, allegedly by the two teenaged brothers, while conducting a traffic stop involving them on Monday, June 8.  Deputy Rodney remains hospitalized, and his fellow deputies have said that it is highly unlikely that he will ever walk again.

The two then fled from the scene and were chased by law enforcement authorities for a ten-hour manhunt. Eventually, they were arrested at around 1 am the following day, Tuesday, June 9. The two teenage brothers were arrested together at a home in the area around where the shooting occurred, Mt. Olive.

The two were, according to local media, soon taken into court, where they both face attempted capital murder charges. In addition, each received a quarter-million-dollar bond for hindering the prosecution charges. Yet further, Cortavion Hobbs was charged with felony fleeing. He faces another quarter-million-dollar bond on that charge as well. Both brothers were denied bond on the attempted murder charges.

According to reports from the media about what occurred, it was Cortavious Hobbs who is alleged to have done the shooting during the traffic stop. He is, as a result, being charged with two counts of attempted capital murder and one count of hindering prosecution.

It is his brother, Cortavion, who was driving the SUV that the deputy pulled over. He initially only faced felony fleeing and accessory after the fact charges, but those were upgraded to a combined total of two counts of attempted murder, one count of hindering prosecution, and one count of felony fleeing.

Speaking about the horribly, tragic, and infuriating situation in the court, the Covington County Justice Court Judge Bobby Wayne Mooney stated that what they did was one of the more serious crimes ever committed against a law enforcement officer in the County of Covington in the past century.

Describing what happened during the shooting, Covington County Sheriff Darrell Perkins said, “I do know [the deputy] indicated, ‘Can I see your driver’s license?’ And apparently, he gave him his license and told him he didn’t have a seatbelt on.” He continued, “They got really nervous. The guy in the back seat was really nervous, according to the video. And, then they fled down the road.”

That led to a chase and the police caught them. Describing how that played out and how the shooting occurred, Sheriff Perkins said, “The passenger in the back seat, he got on the ground, and attention was focused at that time to the driver. Then the passenger while he was on the ground, got up and went to the front of the vehicle and started firing at the officer. The backseat passenger was the first one that fired a weapon. Then, I think, the driver of the vehicle fired the second weapon.”
