Matchday 1 Predictions

The 2026-27 competition gets underway on Tuesday with two early 5.45pm kick-offs in Milan and Munich. The most eye-catching fixture of the two is between the reigning league champions in Germany and England, as Bayern Munich host Manchester City.
It is a daunting opening assignment for City. Bayern are ranked second in Opta’s Power Rankings (95.9) and boast an enviable record on home soil in this competition. They went unbeaten across their five UWCL home matches last season (W4 D1) and have lost just one of their last 16 at home in Europe (W11 D4), a 2-0 defeat to Lyon in the quarter-finals of the 2024-25 campaign.
The supercomputer expects Bayern to make the most of that home advantage, with the German champions winning 52.4% of its 10,000 pre-match simulations. City, meanwhile, came out on top in 23.3%, underlining the size of the challenge awaiting them on their return to the competition.
The other early kick-off on Tuesday is between Inter and Häcken, with the home side making their UWCL debut in front of their own fans. While the Italians will be hoping to mark the occasion with a statement result, the Swedish club are slight favourites according to the supercomputer, winning 55.9% of simulations as they return to the competition for the first time since reaching the quarter-finals in 2023-24.
Arsenal, winners of the competition in 2024-25, begin their latest European campaign at home to HB Køge.
The Gunners have yet to fully hit their stride domestically, opening the WSL season with a 1-0 win at Brighton before being held by Crystal Palace and Manchester United at Emirates Stadium. Despite registering 47 shots across those two home matches, Arsenal scored just once, relying on a stoppage-time equaliser against United to extend their unbeaten run.

No English team have lost to Danish opposition in the UWCL since the north London club’s 5-1 defeat to Fortuna Hjørring in the 2002-03 semi-final (W7 D3 since), and the Opta supercomputer expects Arsenal to secure all three points in this one. Renée Slegers’ side won 81.1% of its pre-match simulations – the highest percentage of any side playing on Tuesday night.
The supercomputer struggled to find a clear winner in its pre-game sims for Juventus vs Benfica, but the Portuguese club have the slight edge (39.9%). That’s despite Juve beating Benfica 2-1 in last season’s league phase thanks to a brace from Cecilia Salvai.
Tuesday’s other clash is between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, with PSG looking to end a miserable eight-game winless streak in the UWCL (L6 D2) – their longest such run in the competition. The Opta supercomputer isn’t confident of them doing that though, as Madrid won 45.6% of its 10,000 pre-game sims.
Record UWCL champions, and last season’s losing finalists, OL Lyonnes make their 2026-27 bow on Wednesday night, travelling to Swiss club Servette in one of the early evening kick-offs.
It’s a daunting start for Servette, with Jonatan Giráldez’s side unbeaten across their last 23 group/league stage games in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (W18 D5) since a 5-1 defeat to Arsenal in 2022-23.
Considering all of Lyon’s previous UWCL meetings with Swiss sides have ended in big wins (all vs Zürich: 8-0, 9-0, 3-0 and 4-0) it’s understandable that Lyon are given a 73.7% chance of victory on MD1 – the biggest chance of an away win across the two nights of action.
The Opta supercomputer also makes the away side favourites in the other early Wednesday fixture, with Roma travelling to Belgium to face OH Leuven.
The Italian side came out on top in 60.8% of the model’s pre-match simulations, reflecting both their growing European pedigree and OH Leuven’s struggles in last season’s competition, where the Belgians won just one of their eight matches (D3 L4).
Attention then turns to Wednesday’s later kick-offs, which feature two of the three highest-ranked teams in the women’s Opta Power Rankings. Defending European champions Barcelona host Paris FC, while Chelsea welcome Austria Wien to The Cherry Red Records Stadium.
The supercomputer views both as overwhelming favourites to begin their campaigns with victories. Barcelona won 88.5% of simulations, while Chelsea were given the highest win probability of any side on MD1 at 93.3%.
The Blues will be hoping to make a statement start as they continue their pursuit of a first UWCL title. Sonia Bompastor’s side face competition debutants Austria Wien, who enter uncharted territory at this level.
History also favours the Blues. Austrian clubs are winless in their last 21 UWCL matches (D3 L18), while English teams have won all five previous meetings with Austrian opposition by an aggregate score of 17-2.
Barcelona, meanwhile, begin the defence of the crown they secured with a commanding 4-0 victory over OL Lyonnes in the 2025-26 final. Pere Romeu’s side once again look among the teams to beat, and much of that confidence stems from the form of Ewa Pajor.
The Poland international scored twice in last season’s final, and was the competition’s leading scorer overall, finding the net 11 times. Pajor scored in eight of her 10 UWCL appearances during the campaign, and Paris FC will need to find a way to contain one of Europe’s most prolific forwards if they are to have any hope of causing an upset.

They did keep Pajor quiet when the sides met last season, but Barcelona still emerged 2-0 winners in Paris thanks to goals from Vicky López and Caroline Graham Hansen.
Containing Barcelona’s attack may be an even tougher task this time around. Hansen and Claudia Pina are the only two players in Liga F to have registered a goal involvement in each of the opening four matchdays of the season, while Pina has been particularly devastating, averaging a goal involvement every 36 minutes.
With attacking depth across the pitch and multiple players arriving in strong form, Barcelona will be confident of beginning their title defence with three points.
