Ukraine seeks thousands of new recruits to face Russian army

In Donbas, Ukrainian volunteers, some over 40 and newly trained, prepare for battle, believing defence is their only option against Russian invasion.

Ukraine is looking for thousands of new soldiers, including 18-year-olds, for its fourth year of resisting Russia's invasion.

A network of enlistment centres has been set up, offering on-demand sign-ups and a new one-year contract for young recruits.

In Donbas, volunteers undergo intensive training. Many are over 40 and have held a gun for just two weeks. "Protecting our country is the only thing we can do," says Natalia, 50, a mother of three from Sumy.
