In one of the largest cross-border assaults in recent weeks, Ukraine launched a massive drone raid on Russia's Krasnodar Region overnight Tuesday, killing two people — including an eight-year-old child — and wounding a dozen others, according to regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev. Hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles swarmed the Black Sea coastal cities of Novorossiysk, Anapa, Gelendzhik and the Temryuksky district, damaging homes, industrial sites and critical infrastructure. Moscow condemned the raid as terrorism, while Kyiv framed it as part of a broader campaign to disrupt Russia's war economy.
Civilians killed in Novorossiysk and coastal villages
"Tragically, those inhumane and criminal strikes resulted in fatalities and injuries, including among children," Kondratyev wrote on Telegram. An eight-year-old was killed in the attack on Novorossiysk, and another child was among the injured. Novorossiysk Mayor Andrey Kravchenko said the city "endured a terrifying night, fending off an inhumane attack by fascist scum," adding that a six-year-old and his mother were hospitalized in critical condition after drone debris crashed through the roof of their home.
In the coastal village of Volna, a man was fatally wounded when debris fell into his garden; emergency medics could not save him. Two people were hospitalized in Anapa after drone fragments struck a residential building, and three homes were damaged in Gelendzhik, where two more people were injured. According to Kondratyev, debris fell on at least 21 residential buildings and four industrial facilities across Novorossiysk, and a collapsed overpass forced a suspension of traffic.
Grain terminals and water supply knocked offline
The strikes also damaged two of Russia's largest grain terminals — the Novorossiysk terminal and NKHP — prompting operators to halt exports and sending Chicago wheat prices higher. A ruptured water main cut cold and hot water service to Novorossiysk's roughly 260,000 residents, the local utility said. Russia's grain lobby warned last month that continued Ukrainian strikes on the Black Sea coast could disrupt exports and drive up food prices in Africa and the Middle East.
Zelensky touts fleet strike as Moscow reports hundreds of interceptions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the operation "unique," saying it targeted "the last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea" using jet-powered drones, cruise missiles and unmanned naval systems, hitting Russian air defenses, docking piers and seaport facilities. Russia's Defense Ministry said it intercepted 502 Ukrainian drones overnight, one of the largest single-night totals of the war. The raid follows a string of deadly Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia, including one that killed 13 people in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, earlier this week, and one that killed eight and injured roughly 60 on a beach near Gelendzhik in early August. Russia, meanwhile, continued its own bombardment of Ukraine, striking a shopping mall in Zaporizhzhia that sparked a fire and cut power to roughly 1,200 customers, and damaging port infrastructure in Odesa, according to Ukrainian officials.
This is now a familiar sequence: a mass drone raid, dead civilians, a damaged grain terminal, dueling statements from Kyiv and Moscow — followed by no real movement toward ending the war that keeps producing nights like this one. Zelensky says Kyiv has handed U.S. negotiators new proposals; Moscow says any deal requires Ukraine to cede four claimed regions. Both statements are now as routine as the strikes themselves.
