UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end their assault on the city of al-Fashir, North Darfur. Guterres expressed alarm over the attack and urged RSF leader Lt Gen Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo to halt the offensive immediately. The call follows concerns raised by EU foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, who warned of potential genocide and demanded adherence to international humanitarian law. The RSF assault comes amid fresh evidence that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is providing aid in the form of arms to the paramilitary group. The UAE has since denied these allegations and insists it is playing a constructive role in ending the conflict.
