The JM Smucker Company has issued a nationwide recall on cinnamon rolls and cheese danishes sold at Walmart.

The company initiated the recall on November 1 after pieces of plastic were found inside the packages.

The two recalled products are 16.5-ounce packages of cinnamon rolls and 16.5-ounce packages of cheese danishes - both from the Great Value brand.

In total, there were 1,602 cases of cinnamon rolls, and 2,027 cases of cheese danishes recalled.

Each affected package contains 12 retail unit items, meaning the company recalled over 40,000 cinnamon rolls and danishes.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finalized the urgent product recall on November 19.

The organization labeled it a Class II - a recall indicating a product has a low chance of causing serious injuries or death.

The status of the urgent recall is ongoing, according to the Enforcement Report.

'The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,' Jacquelyn Cook, director of executive communications with Walmart said in a statement to KSNT.

'A sales restriction was placed on impacted products, and they were removed from impacted stores.'

Cook added that Walmart is currently working with 'the supplier' in the investigation.

The recalled cinnamon rolls have UPC 078742201160, and the cheese danishes have UPC 078742201177 on the packages.

Both products have the same lot code - L092525200 269X.

FDA has not released details on what shoppers should do with the recalled Great Value-brand products.

However, the government organization indicated that shoppers can often return the recalled products to stores for a full refund.

Customers who are not able to do so are advised to 'dispose of the product properly.'

The government agency also advised buyers not to give recalled products to others, including animals.

The chemicals in plastic used for packaging foods can cause harm if ingested.

One thing that could cause severe harm is microplastics - pieces of plastic that are less than five millimeters in diameter.

These microplastics can cause serious health issues like endocrine disruption, weight gain, decreased reproductive health, and cancer.

Chemicals in plastic have also been linked to premature births and miscarriage, according to Anchenggy.

Common and less severe health issues one may experience after swallowing plastic include dizziness and headaches.

The JM Smucker Company made headlines in 2022 after recalling Jif peanut butter products for a potential salmonella contamination.

The outbreak was linked to 12 states in the US and left 14 shoppers sick - two being hospitalized.

A recent recall involving plastic or metal items was for over 167,000 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken due to metal fragment contamination.

Other products recalled this month were Meadow Fresh Potato Salad with Yoghurt and Meadow Fresh Potato Salad with Crème Fraiche.

Lidl recalled both products from its supermarket over fears it contained pieces of copper.

Food Standards Agency (FSA) officials who published the allergy alert said: 'The possible presence of copper makes these products unsafe to eat.'

Before the urgent recall, The JM Smucker Company's stock price had risen 5.7 percent over the last year.

The company is expected to release it's latest fiscal quarter earnings ending in October 2024 on November 26.
