An urgent warning has been issued to dog owners about dog treats which could be contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration announced that Carolina Prime Pet Inc. has recalled bags of dog treats across 19 states.

The North Carolina company initiated the recall of 400 of its' 16-ounce bag 'Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips' treats on November 22.

The treats were sold from Hollywood Feed stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, KansasKentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

They were also available through the company's website.

The problem was noticed after third-party laboratory testing identified the contamination.

Currently, no illnesses have been reported. But should any pet owner believe their dog has eaten the treats, the US Food and Drug Administration advises owners to contact their veterinarian.

Salmonella has the potential to affect both pets through consumption as well as humans through handling any contaminated products - especially with improper handwashing or cleaning of surfaces.

Pets infected with salmonella may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.

Some pets will only have a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

Pets also run the risk of carrying the infection and spreading it to other animals or humans.

Healthy people infected with salmonella may experience any or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Salmonella infections can rarely become more serious and result in arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

If someone experiences any of these symptoms, they should contact their healthcare provider.
