A senior Democrat linked political fallout from US President Donald Trump’s top officials’ use of Signal to discuss war plans to national security threats caused by China, warning that an “erosion of trust” among America’s intelligence officials emboldens attempts by Beijing and Moscow to recruit them.
2. Can birth subsidies save China from its looming population crisis?
The country’s population has been shrinking for three consecutive years, driven mostly by a plunge in the nation’s birth rate. For Chinese authorities, boosting the birth rate has therefore become a top priority – and birth subsidies have rapidly emerged as one of the main tools officials are using to achieve this.
3. Taiwan to hold civil defence drill to put emergency responses to the test
Taiwan will hold a civil defence drill later this week, aiming to test the island’s emergency responses amid rising cross-strait tensions. The exercise – dubbed “Whole of Society Defence Resilience” – will take place on Thursday from 10am to 2pm in the southern city of Tainan. The goal is to prepare the public for crises such as military conflict and natural disasters.
