The United States has announced visa restrictions for individuals it deems responsible for undermining Ghana’s democracy, a move aimed at safeguarding the country’s upcoming December 7 elections. According to the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the restrictions would only target individuals who carry out anti-democratic activities and not the Ghanaian government or its people. While Ghana has upheld free and fair elections for nearly two decades, recent concerns about voter roll irregularities have raised fears of a democratic decline. The announcement follows protests led by Ghana’s main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), calling for a voter roll audit amid claims of unauthorized transfers and deletions. With President Nana Akufo-Addo set to step down, the presidential race is expected to be closely contested among former President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, and other approved candidates.
