US Reaches Terms With Russia, Ukraine On Black Sea Shipping Ceasefire Deal

The United States brokered agreements announced Tuesday between Russia and Ukraine, including one to stop targeting Black Sea shipping, according to Reuters.

One agreement stipulates that Russia and Ukraine will both ensure safe maritime navigation in the Black Sea, and the other lays the groundwork to bar the two warring countries to stop attacking each others’ energy infrastructure, according to Reuters. Russia has stipulated that it will only sign the Black Sea agreement if the U.S. orders Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to abide by its terms.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that Ukraine agreed to the Black Sea ceasefire and a freeze on attacks targeting Russian energy infrastructure, according to Reuters.

U.S. officials have been engaging in talks with representatives from Russia and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia to try to push peace efforts forward to bring an end to the three year-old war. President Donald Trump has made ending the Russia-Ukraine war a major early priority for his administration.
