GameStop slapped $1,399.99 price tags on pre-owned PS5 Pros, declaring that a console somebody else already broke in now costs $500 more than a sealed one.
That premium would have sounded unhinged a year ago, but the PS5 Pro has spent weeks disappearing from US shelves as players scramble for Sony’s beefiest hardware before the hotly anticipated GTA 6 lands on November 19.
Stock got so tight that Sony even made Japanese buyers prove 60 hours of playtime before they could enter a lottery for one, and GameStop clearly took notes.
GameStop’s used PS5 Pro now costs more than a new one
On October 6, GameStop updated its website with a pre-owned PS5 Pro at $1,399.99, although Pro members could knock that down to $1,329.99, the same price the chain slapped on refurbished units.
The change landed a day after an internal memo leaked on Reddit, which set used prices at $1,399.99 for the digital model and $1,499.99 for one with a disc drive, and told staff that charging more than a new console was “intentional.”
A brand new PS5 Pro, meanwhile, still sat on GameStop’s site at its $899.99 RRP, which would have been a bargain had anyone been able to buy it. Third-party sellers on Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart followed with similar listings, though those came from resellers rather than the retailers themselves.
None of this arrived out of nowhere, since Sony launched the Pro at $699.99 in November 2024 before nudging it to $749.99 last August and then to $899.99 in April.
Former GameStop employees suggested the real draw was the margin, because the chain acquires used consoles for trade-in credit far below their value, while new units have to sell at Sony’s price. So every PS5 Pro handed over at the counter could now siphon roughly $1,400 from the next desperate shopper, which is quite the tithe for a hand-me-down.
Back in March, GameStop offered players $69 to ditch their PlayStation for an Xbox, and judging by these price tags, the chain has since decided it would much rather keep the PlayStation and flip it.
