GB News reports as Vatican announces Pope Leo health condition
Pope Leo XIV has undergone successful surgery to remove a small growth from one of his lungs, with the procedure completed as planned, the Vatican has confirmed.
The update came around seven hours after the 70-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital for treatment.
The operation was carried out to remove a small lung nodule, which the Pope revealed on Sunday had been detected at an early stage during a recent medical check-up.
Well-wishers were seen greeting the pontiff as he arrived at the hospital, with some shouting “auguri”, meaning best wishes in Italian.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Vatican said the procedure had been completed successfully and within the expected timeframe.
No further details about the operation or the Pope’s condition were provided.
Professor Stefano Margaritora, the hospital’s chief thoracic surgeon, performed the procedure.
Pope Leo departed the Vatican shortly before 1pm local time before arriving at the hospital, where he shook hands with several officials.
