Prediction Markets: Venezuela
Key Facts
—Prediction markets. Polymarket prices a 64.5% chance that María Corina Machado enters Venezuela by 31 December 2026, up 28.5 points in 24 hours. The thinly traded 31 October contract sits at 44.5%, up 29.5 points. Kalshi, regulated in the US by the CFTC, shows a last trade of 67% on a return before 1 January 2027 (public market data, read 6 October 2026, 1:32 p.m. ET).
—Same-day news. On 6 October, Henry Alviárez of Vente Venezuela told NTN24 that legal and diplomatic steps were aligning for her return. No source ties the price jump to this statement, and no date has been confirmed.
—Volume. Polymarket: about US$6.56 million over the life of the event, about US$21,000 in the last 24 hours. Kalshi: about 16,770 contracts in total, about 2,095 in 24 hours. Both are thinly traded.
—Next. The date of any return, and whether a meeting between Machado and acting president Delcy Rodríguez is arranged. Neither is confirmed.
Traders on Polymarket now put the chance that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado enters the country by 31 December at 64.5%. That is 28.5 percentage points higher than a day earlier. It matters for US readers because Washington has been closely involved in Venezuela since a US military operation captured Nicolás Maduro in January, and a return by the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner would test the transition under acting president Delcy Rodríguez.
The jump came on the same day as a statement by a Machado ally. On Tuesday, 6 October, Henry Alviárez, who coordinates organisation for Machado’s party Vente Venezuela, told the news channel NTN24 that legal and diplomatic steps were being aligned to secure her return. He did not give a date.
Prices here swing by several points within minutes. The market is small. About US$21,000 traded on the Polymarket event in the past 24 hours, so a handful of trades can move the price by many points. Read the number as a mood, not a forecast.
What Prediction Markets Say
Polymarket runs a contract series asking whether Machado will enter Venezuela by a set date. These are the live prices, which equal the market’s implied probability:
- By 31 December 2026: 64.5% (bid 62%, ask 67%; the last trade was 61%), up 28.5 points in 24 hours.
- By 31 October 2026: 44.5% (bid 39%, ask 50%; the last trade was 37%), up 29.5 points in 24 hours. Only about US$5,500 traded in 24 hours on this contract.
- Volume: about US$6.56 million over the life of the event, about US$21,000 in the last 24 hours. Treat the market as thinly traded.
- Related Polymarket contracts: a 2.6% chance that the United States formally recognises Machado as Venezuela’s leader by 31 December (about US$180,000 traded in total), and a 4.5% chance that Donald Trump endorses her for president in 2026 (about US$115,000 traded in total).
- Kalshi (regulated in the US by the CFTC, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission): “Will María Corina Machado visit Venezuela before Jan 1, 2027?” last traded at 67%. The spread is wide, with a bid of 52% and an ask of 71%. About 16,770 contracts have traded in total and about 2,095 in the past 24 hours.
Contracts with earlier deadlines, from July through 30 September, have already closed with no return. That history makes the quick rise in the October and December prices stand out. Prices were read on 6 October 2026, 1:32 p.m. ET.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
Prices are bets, not polls and not a forecast by The Rio Times. We do not link to betting sites and offer no tips.

What Happened the Same Day
The nearest news item is Alviárez’s remark. No source says it moved the price. “En las próximas horas se está alineando lo jurídico con lo diplomático,” he said, meaning that the legal and the diplomatic tracks are lining up “in the coming hours”. Asked about timing, he replied that it could be in the next days, “but why not in the next hours?”
He said she should enter “like any Venezuelan”, by Maiquetía, Valencia or any other point, with supporters waiting. He also said that earlier attempts had been frustrated, according to NTN24.
The statement came after Claudia Macero, a Machado communications aide, returned to Venezuela on 27 September, as reported by CNN en Español. Machado welcomed that return.
Not everyone sounds as sure. El Pitazo, a Venezuelan outlet, quoted sources who said no date has been set. One said it is still unknown when she will come back. A possible meeting between Machado and Rodríguez is being explored, but it is not scheduled.
We found no single reported trigger for the price move itself. The statement is the main new public item that day, but we found no government announcement, court order or flight date, and the traders’ reasons are not public.
What It Means for US Readers
Machado has been outside Venezuela since December 2025, according to El Pitazo. NBC News reported in March that she said she would return “in the coming weeks”; she has not yet done so. Since then, deadlines in the prediction markets have come and gone.
Rodríguez has led the country as acting president since Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured in a US military operation in January, NBC News reported. Rodríguez warned in March that Machado “will have to answer” if she came back. A return would therefore be a test of how far that government tolerates its main opponent.
For US investors, the question links to Venezuelan oil, sanctions policy and the future of Venezuela’s energy sector. A smooth return could raise hopes of an election timetable. A blocked or violent one could do the reverse. We make no forecast on either.
For Venezuelans in the United States, a return would also feed the debate over whether conditions at home allow people to go back. What Is Not Known
No one has published a date, route or flight for Machado’s return. It is unclear whether the authorities would allow her to enter freely, or what would happen on arrival.
It is also unknown who is trading. With so little volume, a few large orders can move the price, and the same price can fall back as quickly as it rose. We cannot say who the buyers are or what they know.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the odds that Machado returns to Venezuela?
On Polymarket, the contract for a return by 31 December 2026 trades at 64.5%, and the one for 31 October at 44.5%, as read on 6 October 2026 at 1:32 p.m. ET. Kalshi’s last trade on a visit before 1 January 2027 was 67%. These are bets, not forecasts, and trading is thin.
Why did the odds jump?
No source states the reason. The same day, Henry Alviárez of Vente Venezuela told NTN24 that legal and diplomatic steps were aligning for her return. No date was given, and sources told El Pitazo that none has been set.
Is a prediction market the same as a poll?
No. A poll asks people what they think. A prediction market shows what traders will pay for a yes or no outcome, so its price reflects money at risk. Both can be wrong, which is why we show them next to official information.
Which markets cover this?
Two platforms do. Polymarket lists the contracts above, plus separate ones on US recognition and a Trump endorsement. Kalshi, which is regulated in the US by the CFTC, lists one contract on whether Machado visits Venezuela before 1 January 2027.
Where does Machado live now?
Machado has been outside Venezuela since December 2025, according to El Pitazo.
